How are family planning high impact practices (HIPs) being adopted, implemented, and sustained across Francophone West Africa❓

This new article, “Family planning high impact practices in Francophone West Africa: ownership, strategies and use for programming,” explores how HIPs are being used across the Ouagadougou Partnership countries, highlighting what is working, where challenges remain, and what is needed for long-term sustainability and scale-up.

The study reveals that while practices such as Immediate Postpartum Family Planning, Community Health Workers, and Mass Media are widely used, barriers like limited provider training and weak contextual adaptation continue to affect implementation.

Authored by Jean Christophe Fotso & al., and published in BMC Public Health, this article offers important insights for policymakers, implementers, donors, and partners working to strengthen evidence-based family planning programming in West and Central Africa.

Evihdaf draws on SMART‑HIPs experience in Burkina Faso and Nigeria to examine how Immediate Postpartum Family Planning (IPPFP) counselling and method uptake are recorded, and where the data get lost between facility registers and HMIS summary forms.

The brief highlights practical actions to strengthen:
- Commodity availability
- Provider competency
- Routine reporting for IPPFP

❇️ Midwives at the Heart of Immunization and Maternal Care

Midwives are often the first trusted health contact for mothers and newborns, and their role extends beyond delivery rooms to immunization, counseling and community outreach.

This International Day of the Midwife we celebrate how routine data collected by midwives (vaccination registers, birth records, outreach logs) powers smarter planning: it reveals missed children, guides cold‑chain routing and shows where community engagement must intensify.

Investing in midwife training, supervision and data tools means stronger immunization coverage, safer births, and more.

Tell us a brief story about a midwife who made a positive difference in your community.

📊 Research brief - Leveraging Mass Media in Family Planning SBC

How do we get the best results from mass media and social media in family planning SBC?

Evihdaf draws on SMART‑HIPs experience in Burkina Faso and Nigeria to show what’s working, what’s missing, and why recent Mass Media activity has been limited.

Key takeaway: mass media is still essential in policy and reach, but recent campaigns have been constrained by funding delays, outdated materials, and a shift toward lower‑cost digital channels. The evidence supports a balanced, multi‑channel approach that pairs the credibility and reach of radio/TV with the agility of social media and community engagement.

❇️ SMART HIPs in Burkina Faso

Are proven family planning approaches being implemented at scale, with quality, and at a cost countries can sustain?

In Burkina Faso, Evihdaf, in collaboration with FHI 360 and Supérieur des Sciences de la Population - ISSP, assessed Immediate Postpartum Family Planning (IPPFP) and Mass Media for Social & Behavior Change. The study focused on the Centre and Hauts Bassins regions, providing insights to strengthen implementation quality and inform national scale up. Findings were shared with national technical working groups in February and August 2024.

❇️ Measuring What Matters in Family Planning

High‑Impact Practices (HIPs) are proven approaches that improve access to quality family planning services. But how well are they implemented? And how far do they reach?

Through the Gates Foundations-funded SMART‑HIPs project, Evihdaf in partnership with FHI 360 and partners, generated evidence on the scale, reach, quality, and cost of HIPs implementation to strengthen decision‑making in family planning programs.

EVIHDAF led implementation in Burkina Faso, Nigeria, and at the Ouagadougou Partnership regional level, contributing critical evidence to improve equitable access to family planning services across West Africa.

📥Pleased to share the Final report from our Case Study of Big Catch‑Up (BCU) Activities in Cameroon.

Launched in 2023 by WHO, UNICEF and Gavi, the Big Catch-up (BCU), is a global initiative to rapidly intensify immunization and reduce immunity gaps from the COVID‑19 period. Cameroon implemented four BCU rounds between September 2024 and December 2025 across 80 priority districts.

As part of a multi-country BCU research project funded by the Alliance for Health Policy and Systems Research (AHPSR)/WHO, EVIHDAF conducted a BCU case study in Cameroon, in collaboration with the Expanded Program on Immunization Cameroon (EPI) - Ministry of Public Health, from May to December 2025.

The current report consolidates lessons from this BCU case study, highlighting critical factors that either contributed to, or hindered the success of the initiative, identifying areas for immediate improvement and persistent obstacles to achieving sustained high coverage.

Round table recap - Digital Evidence Platform for Malaria

During the National Malaria Control Program (NMCP) Scientific Days (15–17 December 2025) at the Yaoundé Congress Hall, EVIHDAF and CESMEL Health hosted a round table on Day 2 to address a pressing challenge: high‑quality malaria evidence exists but is scattered across institutions, limiting timely decision‑making.

During the session we heard how duplicated reports, limited circulation of findings and frequent gaps in financial data slow program adaptation and weaken planning. Panelists urged practical solutions: a single, secure repository of syntheses organized by theme and geography; clear governance and quality‑control rules; and a pilot to test architecture and financing. The session recommended creating a National Malaria Committee Program - Evidence Technical Working Group, drafting a concept and governance brief, and launching a pilot to test technical and funding models.

Many thanks to our panelists: Dr Zakariaou Njoumemi (University of Yaoundé I), Prof. Cyrille Ndo (CRIDCam) and Dr Adalbert Tchetchia (MINSANTE/EPI). Our sincere thanks equally go to Prof Serge C. Billong (MINSANTE), Dr Jean Fosso (MINSANTE/NMCP), Valerie Ahouama (EVIHDAF) and Caroline Teh Monteh (MINSANTE) for steering the discussion.
