Innovation hub in Guangbutun, Wuhan, nearing completion, by Trace Architecture Office .

As the most public node in the campus’s three-dimensional system of communication, Innovation hub uses two concrete cores as its only principal vertical elements connected to the ground. A system of double large-span spatial trusses creates a continuous large room across two spanning structural frames. The structure consequently releases almost the entire area of the second floor, enabling public activities of different scale and time to be held freely. It also employs a double-skin curtain-wall system, with both layers suspended beyond the structure to form an enveloping shell, to create an environmental buffer between interior and exterior.

Visitor center building in Bawan town by TAO Trace Architecture Office , Lujiangba, Baoshan, Yunnan, China.

At the upper café terrace, two existing trees have been carefully preserved. The terrace is shaped around their trunks, allowing the architecture to yield to the trees rather than replace them, establishing an intimate reciprocity between landscape and construction. Beneath their canopy, tables, seating, and exhibition displays create an informal communal setting where villagers and visitors naturally gather. The space accommodates resting, conversation, tea drinking, grain drying, and community events, reactivating the richness of everyday village life. Beyond their ecological function of providing shade and enclosure, the preserved trees embody the site’s collective memory and reorganizes its spatial order. They connect the site‘s past and present and provide a lasting ecological setting for shared encounters between local residents and visitors.

Visitor Center, Bawan Village, by Trace Architecture Office.

These open interfaces provide natural ventilation and daylight while establishing visual relationship between occupants and the surrounding mountains, valleys, and distant landscape. Rather than employing expansive glazing to maximize panoramic views, the architecture relies on a series of carefully calibrated apertures that create controlled and intimate encounters between people and nature.
It is constructed primarily of rough local stone and exposed concrete, bringing two distinct material sensibilities into relation. The stone extends the tactile language of the village’s retaining walls, while exposed concrete provides structural clarity and spatial order. Openings are positioned according to structural rhythm and carefully framed views, with their dimensions, proportions, and orientations responding to specific site conditions.

The spatial sequence steps upward in a terraced retreat, creating a progressively layered circulation path. The lower level houses reception and exhibition functions, the middle section incorporates resting nodes, and the uppermost level expands into an open coffee terrace. The overall journey emphasizes gradual immersion and passage—entering through the enclosed stone-wall gateway, moving from interior to exterior across the terraces, and finally confronting the panoramic view of the distant mountains along the Lujiang Valley. This procession reads like a slow walk through the terrain, continually enacting a reunion with both nature and time.

Dameiyong Winery, Mangkang, Tibet, China, by TAO Trace Architecture Office

The site is located at the edge of a slope on the western side of the existing winery complex. To the rear lie production facilities and vineyards that spread along the sloping terrain, while the front faces the western mountain range, overlooking the Lancang River Valley below. The Hengduan Mountains here form a canyon topography with dramatic elevation differences, endowing the site with two distinct spatial scales: to the west, reddish-brown mountains rise abruptly in close range, creating a sense of vertical grandeur experienced from below; along the north-south axis, the Lancang River meanders between the flanking mountain ranges, with valley terraces unfolding one after another, generating a continuous deep perspective that extends far into the distance.

The vertical grandeur and deep perspective embedded in the site further serve as the basis for the building’s spatial organization. The architecture responds to the imposing scale of the facing mountain mass with a concentrated and legible volume, while integrating the river valley’s depth into visitors’ walking experience through cantilevered edges extending toward the gorge, paths that unfold along the perimeter, and progressively revealed vistas.

Wuhan Guangbutun Tech Plaza, under construction, by .

A dual large-span roadshow space is formed by lifting secondary beams above a 27-meter space truss. Two concrete cores act as the only architectural elements connecting the truss to the ground, liberating the spatial field from structural constraints. Positioned at the center of the maker, incubation, and pilot-production complex within the tech campus, the project provides a flexible public framework for diverse forms of collective activity and interaction.

Under construction, Visitor Center in Kangrinboqe, China, by TAO.

The project site is located on the western side of Tarqin Village, Baga Township, Burang County, Ngari Prefecture, Tibet Autonomous Region. It lies at the interface between the edge of a human settlement and the natural highland landscape, serving as a crucial transitional node before entering the pilgrimage circuit around Mount Kailash. To the north, it is adjacent to the main road leading to the sacred mountain area; to the east, it faces the Tarqin International Tourism Town; to the south, it opens onto the expansive plateau desert landscape, offering distant views of Namu Na-ni Peak; and to the west, it gradually transitions into a gentle natural slope. The site itself occupies a liminal state between two distinct environments: on one side, a clearly defined system of human infrastructure and services; on the other, a vast and indeterminate natural landscape. The built environment here tends to converge, while the natural environment unfolds. Accordingly, the visitor center is not only tasked with service and transfer functions but also assumes a spatial role as a threshold—it marks the point of transition from human order to the highland terrain, from a state of transportation to a spiritual journey, where the pace of the body gradually slows and undergoes transformation.
