We are pleased to announce that Lyndon Neri (Lyndon Neri), co-founding Partner of Neri&Hu Design and Research Office, has been appointed the Kenzō Tange Visiting Design Critic in Architecture for the Fall 2026 semester at the Harvard Graduate School of Design.

Named in honor of Kenzō Tange, a peerless figure among twentieth century Japanese architects and recipient of the 1987 Pritzker Architecture Prize, this distinguished design teaching appointment carries forward Tange‘s enduring legacy of architectural and urban inquiry.

Past holders of the chair include Alvaro Siza, Zaha Hadid, Peter Zumthor, Kazuyo Sejima, Jacques Herzog and Pierre de Meuron, Yvonne Farrell and Shelley McNamara (Grafton Architects), Wang Shu, Yung Ho Chang, Kersten Geers and David Van Severen (OFFICE), Christian Kerez, Anne Lacaton, OPEN (Li Hu and Huang Wenjing), Lina Ghotmeh, Dorte Mandrup, Minsuk Cho, and many other visionary practitioners from around the world.

Ten Years of The Lantern | Sulwhasoo Flagship Store, Seoul

Designed in 2016, The Lantern has now marked ten years in Seoul. With the store now closed, we revisit the initial ideas behind it.

The lantern holds profound significance throughout Asian history, both in its literal function and its mythological resonance. It guides one through darkness, illuminating the path and marking both the beginning and the end of a journey.

Neri&Hu‘s radical transformation of an existing five storey building in Seoul, South Korea, into a flagship store for leading Asian skincare brand Sulwhasoo was inspired by these very notions. The original structure, designed by Korean architect IROJE, was completed in 2003.

Celebrating the heritage of the brand, Neri&Hu sought to develop a concept deeply rooted in Asian culture and tradition. The intention was to allow customers to discover the wealth of Asian wisdom that underpins the Sulwhasoo ethos.

This ambition gave rise to a continuous brass structure that weaves through the entire store, binding the spaces together while gently guiding customers as they explore the full extent of the interior.

Ten years on, we look back at The Lantern, a project shaped by Identity, Journey, and Memory.

To celebrate Neri&Hu’s 20th Anniversary, we are delighted to share a selection from our Archive Series that reflects the ethos of our practice.

Multidisciplinary Practice

Since its founding in 2006, Neri&Hu has expanded the conventional boundaries of architecture to encompass interiors, product design, branding, exhibitions, and cultural initiatives. Rather than treating these disciplines as separate pursuits, we view them as interconnected tools through which architecture can engage everyday life.

Central to this ethos is the belief that design practice is never neutral, but rather multidisciplinary. Whether designing a retail interior or a piece of furniture, Neri&Hu applies the same rigorous process of research, material investigation, and narrative development. Like architecture, the multifaceted inquiry and values from Neri&Hu’s design lies not solely in formal expression, but in the intersections between architecture and object, space and narrative, craft and culture. Each discipline informs the others, allowing ideas to migrate across scales while maintaining conceptual continuity.

Urban Renewal

For Neri&Hu, urban renewal is never an act of restoration. Grounded in what the practice terms reflective nostalgia, our adaptive reuse projects engage the city not through a mimetic return to the past, but through a critical dialectic between preservation and demolition. This negotiation constitutes one of the fundamental ethos of our work. While these urban renewals share recurrent operational strategies, including material contrast, tectonic differentiation, formal assemblage, and surgical grafting, each project confronts a distinct set of challenges. These pertain to the fraught legacies of the concession era, a resistance to the commodification of historical pastiche, and the question of representation within the temporal dialectic of past and present. Across the works presented, one discerns a careful calibration of opposing forces: the new against the old, the smooth against the textured, and the refined against the raw.

The lecture will address themes of ruinophilia and pentimenti. The basis for adaptive reuse more often than not, are actually non-romantic relics from the past. These remnants nevertheless pose important questions in terms of sustainability and construction waste management, as well as deeper philosophical questions regarding originality and authorship. In our confrontation with this set of issues, we refer to Svetlana Boym, who suggests “off-modern” relationships between preservation and development, advocating for designers to engage with traces of the past - past authors, builders, failed projects, and revealing the traces of non-realized compositions.

Lyndon Neri (), Hon. FAIA and Rossana Hu (), Hon. FAIA, Founding Partners of Neri&Hu Design and Research Office, will be delivering the fourth annual Bob & Sherry Faust Distinguished Lecture, organized by Auburn University School of Architecture, Planning and Landscape Architecture (APLA). This annual event honors the legacy of Robert L. Faust, Professor Emeritus of Architecture and the support of Professor Faust‘s wife Sherry.

The lecture will take place on March 20, 2026, from 4:00 PM to 6:00 PM (CDT), at The Hotel at Auburn University and Dixon Conference Center, Auburn.

Lyndon Neri, Hon. FAIA (), and Rossana Hu (), Hon. FAIA, Founding Partners of Neri&Hu Design and Research Office, have been invited to deliver a lecture as part of the Pratt Sessions at Pratt Institute in New York.

The subject of this lecture is a paper prepared for the International Committee of Architectural Critics (CICA), forthcoming from Park Books, Zurich, under the title Architecture between Autonomy and Engagement. The paper‘s theme provides a framework for examining how architectural practice navigates between two seemingly opposing ideals: Autonomy and Engagement.

Pratt Sessions are a format for discourse at the Department of Graduate Architecture, Landscape, and Urban Design. Each session is devoted to an in-depth exploration of a single project by one author or practice.

The lecture will take place on March 6, 2026, from 6:15 PM to 8:15 PM (EST), at Higgins Hall Auditorium, Pratt Institute School of Architecture, Brooklyn.
