We are happy to share the first few images of a Part of a Broader Development in Larnaca.

The Project concerns a multi-residential development with selected collective facilities, where effort has been directed in defining the shared infrastructure and quality of the open space network – so that an appropriate residential environment emerges.

The articulation of forms and the deployment of materials create inflections upon and between buildings. Amongst other affects, these inflections forge stepping gradations in height between the different parts – thereby achieving a balance between diversity and continuity.

European University of Cyprus: our vision for transforming the Existing Southern Cluster of Buildings into a Cohesive Campus.

Further to the recent work that has already been implemented, which includes the new Medical School Building and the upgrading of the Norther Cluster’s Façades, the conversion of the main surface parking area into an Open Green Space seeks to create a performative hub and a visual epicentre for the University.

By creatively reworking the key typological precedent of the Central Courtyard in Tertiary Education Institutions, the Project seeks to efficiently resolve functional accommodation (including parking below grade), while providing the University a green oasis with appropriate microclimate, which acts as the focus of interior views, as well as an outdoor space for both events and contemplation.

The Thalassaemia International Federation runs a global initiative whereby major public buildings are illuminated in Red on the day. Red symbolises the blood-related nature of the disorder, the preciousness of blood, and the strength of the patients.

Our Practice has a long heritage of supporting these brave patients, as both the first major Thalassemia Clinic in Cyprus (an integral part of the Archbishop Makarios III Medical Cluster), which opened in the 1970s, and the Ongoing Project to Rectify and Upgrade the Existing Clinic are Projects undertaken by J+A Philippou.

A dive into JAP’s Archive.

This residence in Engomi’s Montparnasse Hill dates from the 1960s, which was the time when this district began gaining urban interest. The site is characterised by dramatic topographic variation and long-horizon distant views toward Nicosia.
Conceptually the house is organised with the deployment of a series of retaining walls (δόμες) – which historically characterise local landscape interventions (for both
agricultural and architectural purposes) – upon which several ‘pure prisms’ are positioned in a way to create 3 distinct, yet interrelated, gardens.
This primordial diagram is further elaborated with a set of secondary architectural moves – such as, the inclination of some roofs so that they respond to (but not mirror) the topography, the use of local stone for the retaining walls (in accord to their long
tradition), as well as the heightened framing of windows to emphasise their majestic vistas while shielding the larger openings with use of brise-soleil.

This post dovetails with the preceding one and concerns an Apartment Building in Engomi, Nicosia.

The first and second floors contain one apartment each, while the third and fourth floors host a duplex. In a subversion of the conventional residence’s sectional hierarchy, the living and dining spaces of the duplex are located on the higher level, where they are integrated with a generous veranda. The veranda’s uncovered component is surrounded by the covered, while it is generally directed towards the south-west – enjoying views of the green fields in the distant horizon.

The other main feature of the duplex unit is a double-spaced workspace, which fuses the residence’s private and public thresholds. All in all, the interior palate of the entire building is premised on a soothing colour scheme with restraint in its detailing, thereby allowing the building’s architecture to come to the fore.

This post concerns an Apartment Building in Engomi, Nicosia, and focuses on the presentation of Exterior Views – allowing Interior Photos to be presented in a forthcoming post.

The building is located in an area which used to be farmlands, while a considerable part of the plot’s south-west context is still retained as green fields. The building’s form, which is heavily inflected by site conditions, is generated by a differentially folding envelope that is coherent in the round – in terms of edge, volume and voids – bringing to the fore its urban presence as a ‘solitaire’.

This formal logic also informs the project’s materiality – as smooth white plaster is deployed on the envelope, while rough grey render is used for the walls. On the ground floor, a fairfaced concrete pedestal organises the entrance, encloses the pilotis and forms the plot boundary.
