It's not bad but also not good, it was hot and the painting was drying in an instant. I was waiting to get out. I have some pics taken and want to do it again at the studio.

In my head I keep asking what would Joseph zubuvic do. He certainly would have done better. I'll have another try at that place again when that temperature cools down a bit.

Anyway what I wanted to share was that process, 4 steps,- drawing, Frist wash, second wash and highlights.

No matter what the subject is

Plien air does not have to be complicated ( whether that painting comes ok is a different point all tighter)

Palette, paper, sponge, brush, tripod and a board to mount is all you need in a grocery bag .

Let's see if that painting will look ok, I'll post that in that next reel

I am in Ely this morning to paint the boat yard

A lot to pack into 60 seconds, but here's the core of it.
The first half shows what most beginners do โ€” no stretched paper, no incline, no plan for colour or tone. They paint, correct, paint again. Layer on top of wet layer. The result is muddy, flat, lifeless colour where nothing reads clearly.
The second half shows what changes when you actually understand tone. You start light. You let each layer dry before adding the next. You work with intention rather than hope.
The result? Clean colour, visible layers, real depth, and a painting where every element has clarity.
One video. Two approaches. The difference is not talent โ€” it's process.
If you want to learn this properly, I'm running a free One Day Watercolour Challenge before my Watercolour Cityscapes course launches on August 1st. You'll get hands-on practice, freebies, and a full preview of what's inside the course.
Join the challenge โ€” link in bio.

Literally 10 mins and I have to pack again , no break for painting here at Tivoli gardens in Copenhagen. My father's gift of practicing patience.

A smile is fake for photos, half that time it's telling kids to wait for a min more.

Hope you have a good Sunday

If you haven't signed up for a one day challenge pls do so, it gives you a taste for what to expect for the beginners cityscape launching Aug 01

My favourite hack is to pick an element and paint as many as you can. Two things are in play here, one you make mistakes and you can correct it in that next painting and things which are good you continue to practice.

Both are self learning steps which are reinforced by repetition.

It can be full-paintings with a topic or in this case some trees.

Make a habit of practice and importantly remove the stress in the process.

All the learning like this one I have put them on to a new course ( beginners cityscape) launching on aug 01. Join the waiting list in the link.

I'll drop a one day challenge link today , the idea is you get to try a free step by step painting with all the reference materials. This is a sample of what to expect out of the course.

I always ask guests what their ideal day looks like. For me I don't have the pressure of recording and social media posts. I am in my pyjamas sipping coffee, listening to a podcast and painting.

My hack is I pick one element in this case trees and paint as many as possible till it becomes second nature to me. The more elements you have in your ool box the easier it becomes to paint a full subject.

Let me what a productive creative day look like for you in the comments.

I have pull all through best practices top and teaching in to my first ecoruse- beginners cityscape launching on Aug01, if you want to join that waiting list please see that bio for link

I'll share a one day free challenge dropping this week, more information coming soon

Another full house teaching flowers yesterday at TheApex. Honestly, I absolutely love doing these workshops. The team at Apex is incredible, and hosting there is always a highlight.

Itโ€™s funny looking backโ€”I started out just doing landscapes. Now Iโ€™m teaching flowers, cityscapes, and Iโ€™m about to add urban sketching into the mix, focusing heavily on perspective. My background in mechanical engineering actually plays a massive role in how I teach. I look at art through a logical lens and use a structured, step-by-step process that strips away the guesswork. Over 90% of the people who come to my classes have never picked up a brush before. Years of teaching have allowed me to fine-tune a system where anyone can paint any subject, without being boxed into just one style.

I call it the 3-3-4 process: 3 layers, 3 tones, and 4 steps.

I'm finally packaging everything Iโ€™ve learned into a brand-new e-course: Beginners Cityscape.

Weโ€™ll tackle three full paintings together, plus a bonus project, covering all the essentials like drawing, color theory, and light and shadow. The perspective module and the homework assignments alone are worth the price of admissionโ€”by the end, you'll be able to look at a building and actually know how to draw it. I know that sounds like a bold claim, but years of in-person teaching have been distilled into this exact course. It drops on August 1st.

To kick things off, Iโ€™m launching a one-day challenge video this Friday. Itโ€™s completely free and comes with everything you need to finish a masterpiece, plus a free essential toolkit book and early access to a waitlist discount.

If you want to see what the classes are like, you can search Sunil Kalbandi reviews to see what past students have said.

Hit the link in my bio to sign up for the e-course waitlist.
