Haus am See. A seamless integration of design and nature. Interior view of this single-family home, thoughtfully built into the existing hill with wooden surfaces that echo the surrounding landscape.

This cross-section reveals the essence of our lakeside house: a solid, earthbound ground floor housing the private spaces, while the lightweight timber upper level floats above as an open, column-free living space. A continuous terrace embraces the south-facing façade, seamlessly blending indoor and outdoor life.

Designed with a low-tech approach, the house relies on natural ventilation and smart orientation instead of mechanical systems. Large openings to the south and west invite light and views, while the closed north and east sides provide privacy and protection.

Haus am See. Here’s a glimpse at one of our alternate floor plans that inspired us along the way. Sometimes, it’s the options we don’t choose that teach and inspire us the most. On the ground floor, a corridor stretches through the entire length, creating a unique visual link with the hillside on both ends. Secondary spaces are positioned at the back, while the primary spaces open up to the front. The upper level is divided into six grids: three front grids unite into an open living space with a grand view of the lake, while the back grids form the kitchen, home office, and staircase.

The renovation of the brick building will preserve its historic charm while transforming it into a functional and inviting space. The exterior brick walls and roof will be cleaned and restored, with two large openings added on the south side for new double doors that enhance light and access.
Inside, the ground floor will host various workshop, food processing area, and a communal gathering space, all benefiting from the new openings. The upper floor, retaining its structure, will gain a new wooden floor and slim framed windows to create a bright, serene space.

The winter house in Schorfheide features a stunning upstairs double-height space that connects both upper floors. A long window spans both levels, flooding the area with natural light and offering beautiful views. A net on the upper floor serves as a unique lounging area, allowing people to relax within the atrium and look out through the window. This design creates an open, airy atmosphere, fostering a sense of unity and connection with the surrounding landscape.

Section through the second house in Schorfheide. This house is aimed to be the winter house with a Japanese inspired modern Onsen area, a custom made clay sauna and a relaxation area next to the kitchen. The house is designed to feel like a modern Japanese treehouse with ladders leading upstairs. Upstairs a part of the ceiling is demolished to have a net hanging in the atrium in order to relax or read while looking out the window into nature.

This cozy winter house is designed for colder darker days, featuring an outdoor hot tub, a Japanese Onsen, and a sauna. Japanese-inspired sliding doors elegantly separate the spaces, while a new wooden oak floor flows seamlessly throughout the entire ground floor. The kitchen is a long, minimalistic masterpiece, crafted from oak and stainless steel, offering both style and functionality.A spacious terrace stretches across the entire width of the house, incorporating the hot tub and providing access to the forest.

Section through the main house, Schorfheide. The existing floor slab currently dividing the two floors will be removed, opening up a spacious central area ideal for family gatherings, events, and vibrant Summer dinners. Natural light will flood in through newly placed expansive roof windows and a large opening facing South, illuminating the dining and kitchen spaces.

Within the main house, the master bedroom expresses warmth and tranquility. Its newly installed oak flooring and sleek yet textured plastered clay walls set a comfortable atmosphere. The exposed roof construction, coupled with wooden planks between the beams enhances the cozy atmosphere. Deep window niches offer inviting nooks to enjoy the surrounding forest scenery. A freestanding bathtub in the corner adds another highlight to the cozy retreat.
