Did you know… humans are biologically designed to nurse anywhere from 2 to 7 years?
That’s called natural term breastfeeding, and while it might sound shocking in some places (hi, Western culture 👋), it’s totally normal — even expected — in many parts of the world. Some littles wean earlier, some keep going longer. It’s all within the range of what’s biologically normal
✨ Here’s what’s wild (and amazing) about human milk as baby grows:
🧠 Milk composition changes over time — becoming richer in fats, proteins, and immune-boosting components
🛡️ Lysozyme, an anti-inflammatory enzyme that fights bacteria, increases steadily after 6 months and keeps rising into toddlerhood
💪 Lactoferrin (a protein that blocks harmful bacteria, supports iron absorption, and even inhibits cancer cell growth) also goes up as breastfeeding continues
🦷 Lactoferrin also helps kill the bacteria that cause cavities (👋 strep mutans!), which is pretty amazing since it’s often misunderstood how milk supports, rather than harms, oral health
💡 Your child’s immune system doesn’t fully mature until around age 6. Providing breast milk past infancy is just one additional way to support their overall health
For parents, natural term breastfeeding can also lower risks of things like breast cancer and offer a continued emotional and biological connection that feels grounding for some families
