Cities in Transition - DomusAir’s current issue sharpens its focus on mobility as an urban driver, examining how air, sea and rail infrastructures interact with the cities they serve and the networks they sustain.

In this context, S21 is presented as a working laboratory and a hub-cityscape in the making. At the centre of this experiment stands the hall itself, defined by the concrete chalices and their anticlastic shell roof. Structural intelligence that channels light, air and load with equal clarity, while the digitally driven casting process hints at a new economy of form, enabling variation and reuse.

DomusAir, published twice yearly alongside Domus, serves as a dedicated platform for transportation-led architecture; the current release accompanies Domus 1107 (December).

Topping out at the Bonatzbau in Stuttgart

The Bonatzbau reaches its next . We celebrate the topping out and the people who made it possible: the builders, engineers and craftspeople who brought precision and patience to every stone, beam and joint.

Among those marking the occasion were Jens Borgschulte of who honoured the building’s legacy and the teamwork behind its renewal, Ralf Thieme, Member of the Board at .infrago who described the Bonatzbau as “a model for the station of the future” and ’s Lord Mayor Dr Frank Nopper who called it “the gateway to one of the most architecturally striking railway stations in the world.”

By late 2026, the Bonatzbau will reopen as part of Stuttgart’s new main station - bright, barrier-free and home to more than thirty retail and dining spaces along with a 150-key hotel.

Plange Mühle Campus among the first seven projects worldwide to be certified under the new DGNB system for existing districts, introduced today at .official. This milestone marks a significant addition to how sustainability is practiced - a signal that progress lies not only in building anew, but in the intelligent transformation of what already stands.

Complementing the DGNB (German Sustainable Building Council) framework for new projects, the „Bestandsquartiere“ certification highlights reuse, adaptation and the reduction of embodied carbon. It recognises projects that retain existing fabric and character, while improving energy efficiency, occupant comfort and social value.

Honoured to see our concept for a sustainable, energy self-sufficient, modular and demountable marina, event and hotel receive the architectural award at the Monaco Sustainable Smart Marina Rendez-Vous. This recognition is an encouragement, as it resonates with our values and our way of approaching sustainability as a whole.

Yachting is a field of contrasts: indulgent luxury on one side, ecological and social responsibility on the other. In between, marinas set the tone. As destinations and places of encounter, they bear the responsibility to balance efficiency with sensitivity to their local context.

At the Monaco Sustainable Smart Marina Rendez-Vous, the discussion centred on the infrastructure, impact and operation of marinas. Innovators, start-ups, architects, politicians, marina operators and captains brought perspectives that revealed both the urgency and the potential of transition. With M3 Monaco leading the initiative and the support of the Fondation Prince Albert II de Monaco, the call for systemic change gains real force.

We thank the organisers for their vision, hospitality and the rare quality of dialogue they created.

Un esprit, une équipe, un club. Merci, , et !

We are pleased to present our finalist proposal for the Certosa Island Competition at M3 Monaco’s Smart & Sustainable Marina Rendezvous, a forum dedicated to climate-conscious and socially responsible waterfronts. The case study brief called for a marina that integrates hospitality, cultural amenities, maritime services and heritage context within a framework that advances environmental performance and long-term adaptability.

Our concept organises all new functions along a „Smart Spine“, reducing land impact, ensuring resilience against rising waters and generating surplus renewable energy. Concentrating rather than expanding safeguards landscape and archaeology while creating a reversible, flexible framework for future use. The Spine also acts as an infrastructural backbone, integrating clean energy, logistics and circulation into one clear system that enables phased growth without compromising the island’s character.

JEP offers a point of arrival and pause in the centre of the city, combining urban proximity with an unexpected sense of calm.

The design balances transparency and retreat, culminating in a rooftop bar that frames views across Düsseldorf.

With its completion, the project advances the city’s renewal and reinforces the dialogue with Kö-Bogen I and II, the Dreischeibenhaus, and the Schauspielhaus.

200 years of banking, 25 years of architectural renewal: celebrates its 200th anniversary this year, a milestone that intersects with the upgrade of its headquarters.

The 1964 tower, once a closed and opaque midcentury structure, was stripped back to its frame and rearticulated with a double-skin glass façade, full-height glazing and three additional floors. The transformation produced a building of enhanced clarity, amplified urban presence and greater spatial operability.

The reconfigured podium opens the block to the city. Public passages and atriums extend the building into the public realm. A continuous glass screen mediates between traffic and interior, simultaneously shielding and revealing the transparent banking landscape. Civic depth is added through art, as ’s translucent portraits of Düsseldorf residents dissolve the boundary between public and private, turning the façade into a cultural canvas.

You can already see how the four individual gridshells are becoming a defining feature of the new building, shaping the clear architectural language of the future light-filled Stuttgart Main Station. Alongside the 28 light eyes, they channel daylight into the underground hall, creating a bright and open atmosphere.

As part of our architectural design and planning for the new station, they combine structural precision with a high level of design quality, adding a distinctive accent to the overall architecture.

Stuttgart Main Station: the genesis of the chalice column

From the very first stroke of inspiration trapped on paper, through the delicate beauty of soap skin models, the complex CAD and FEM studies to the meticulous craftsmanship behind each of the 28 skylight topped chalice columns: this visionary journey culminates in a transcendent and elegant structure.

The last chalice is being currently cast - a final crucial support element completing the intricate vault.
