Call for interns

We’re opening a design internship position at unit-design.

Starting in March, we’re looking for you to join our studio in Frankfurt as a mandatory intern and become part of our daily design work. You’ll be involved in real projects in interdisciplinary design – spanning communication design, industrial design, integrated design, and product design.

"The Wetterpark is probably unique worldwide," writes the Frankfurter Rundschau – and it is now celebrating its 20th anniversary.
As early as 2002, unit-design, in cooperation with the City of Offenbach, developed the initial concepts that would later secure EU funding. All designs, from the landscape architecture and the repurposing of the former municipal nursery, to the weather-explaining exhibits, the DWD (German Weather Service) weather station, the infographics, as well as the planning and implementation – were created by unit-design.
In 2006, the 12.3 meter-high tower, also designed by unit-design, was inaugurated. Eight years later, in 2014, the exhibition building designed by architects , housing the exhibition developed by unit-design, was opened.

The Wetterpark Offenbach, as a publicly accessible and free-of-charge exhibition, is truly unique in its form. The park embodies in every aspect our credo: Design for public interest.
It is absolutely worth visiting, in any weather, to experience this remarkable project.

Breaking Down Barriers, Not Creating Them – This is one of the core responsibilities of designers worldwide.

We have also made it our mission to implement this principle in the wayfinding systems we develop.
But what does this look like in signage design?

For example, in our latest project, which includes a wayfinding system that meets the requirements of SIA 500 “Barrier-Free Buildings”.

SIA 500 defines how buildings must be designed to ensure safety and accessibility for all people – regardless of individual limitations. Clear structures and a barrier-free design play a crucial role in wayfinding systems.

Did you know? Braille celebrates its 200th anniversary this year. Developed by Louis Braille in 1825, this tactile writing system has empowered visually impaired individuals for two centuries, allowing them to independently navigate their surroundings.

What makes a wayfinding system SIA 500-compliant?

✅ Tactile and visual elements for visually impaired individuals
✅ High contrast and easily readable signage
✅ Barrier-free routing for unrestricted access
✅ Clear orientation aids for all visitors

The Swedish pharmaceutical company Sobi (Swedish Orphan Biovitrum AG) has consolidated its two Swiss locations into new premises in Basel. We are pleased to have designed a customized guidance system that meets the requirements of SIA 500 for barrier-free construction.

Floor directories and door signs with tactile lettering and Braille, as well as a gender-neutral and wheelchair-accessible restroom on the top floor, ensure maximum inclusion.

“Noise barriers are never beautiful.”
Designer Christian Breig challenged this idea at the Munich Traffic Noise Protection Conference.

Instead of asking what’s beautiful, he asked:
How can noise protection feel natural in a cultural landscape?

The answer: a design process rooted in place, developed with .infrago , local authorities, and communities.

Good design isn’t decoration – it’s strategy.
And it belongs at the table from day one.

A million shades of yellow—about as many blades of grass as on a football field. When you add variations in saturation, brightness, and intensity, the number becomes virtually infinite. And that’s before even considering the interplay of color, surface, typography, and scale.

Finding the perfect combination is exactly what we do. And in the Europahalle Karlsruhe, you can see just how well it worked.

The path to the final result is rarely linear—it involves comparisons, adjustments, and fine-tuning. Here are some insights into our sampling process.

To bring all of this to life, you also need a manufacturer capable of meeting the exceptional demands of the design. That’s why it was a pleasure to work together with our manufacturers Dambach Corporate Design Elements and Schreiner Coburg, who did such an amazing job.

high visibility, low invest,

A strategy we have successfully implemented in many of our refurbishment projects – most recently in the Europahalle Karlsruhe for Amt für Hochbau und Gebäudewirtschaft .

Following an extensive fire protection renovation, the Europahalle Karlsruhe is back in operation and has been the home of the Karlsruhe Lions basketball team since October. With a capacity of around 5,000 spectators, it remains the city’s premier venue for major sporting events.

Built in 1983, the hall now meets all modern safety standards and offers state-of-the-art technology, enhanced catering, and improved hospitality facilities.

Since no architectural changes were made during the refurbishment, our goal was to visually express the renewal through a bold wayfinding concept. unit-design developed large-scale wall graphics that intuitively highlight key visitor touchpoints. With their minimalist yet striking design, they blend seamlessly into the engineering structure while creating a strong contrast with their vibrant yellow-clear markers that redefine the space as new.

We played a key role in organizing the building’s wayfinding, user
experience, safety, and workspace utilization. Our signage and
design work seamlessly integrates with Roche's brand, reflecting
their commitment to innovation. The pRED Center is the first to
feature the new global signage guidelines we developed in 2022,
and it perfectly captures the evolving spirit of workplace design.
