At the H2O Pleasure Boat Insurance Forum, our colleague Felix Bussmann (MCS Spain) shared insights on testing, technology and the future of marine claims.

From advanced inspection methods to real-world survey work in shipyards — discussions like these help push the industry forward.

Proud to support the forum as a sponsor and to contribute to the conversation shaping the future of marine insurance and claims.

The worst-case scenario no one likes to talk about - but everyone should know: water ingress.

In the latest episode of , we discuss what truly matters in those moments: staying calm, acting with structure, and having a clear emergency plan.

Because sometimes, preparation is the most important lifeline.

In this episode, we talk about:

- the most common causes of water ingress
- what a solid emergency plan really looks like
- step by step: what to do when water starts coming in
- how to prepare both crew and vessel for an emergency
- Kai’s personal stories – from being stuck in the mudflats to hitting a rock in Denmark

An episode every sailor should listen to at least once.

Wuppertal | Technical Training & Innovation

Our team recently took part in a specialist conference focused on the latest developments in non-destructive testing and inspection.

With AI increasingly supporting modern measurement and testing processes, we continue to invest in knowledge, innovation, and hands-on experience with advanced inspection technologies.

Together with our partner Karl Deutsch, co-organizer of the event, we had the opportunity to explore newly developed instruments in practice and engage in valuable professional exchange.

Staying close to the latest technical progress helps us ensure precise assessments and strong expertise in an evolving marine environment.

A cumulative loss on this scale changes everything.

When entire marinas are affected at once, the impact goes far beyond individual boats — it becomes a market-wide event. Brokers, insurers, reinsurers, surveyors, and private owners all find themselves part of the same complex network of claims and recovery.

Storm seasons like 2018 in the Caribbean showed how quickly marine catastrophes can escalate into industry-defining loss scenarios — driven by accumulation, interconnected risks, and the sheer concentration of values on the water.

In events like this, effective claims handling depends on experience, structure, and international coordination. At MCS, our role is to connect all parties involved and deliver solutions even under the most extreme circumstances.

These aerial shots capture only a fraction of the scale — but the industry-wide effort behind it is unforgettable.

The largest loss event we have ever managed — unprecedented in both complexity and scale.

A cumulative damage scenario involving the highest number of boats, the most extensive destruction, and a total loss volume approaching half a million. What made this case truly exceptional was not only the magnitude, but the operational challenge behind it.

Through close coordination, international expertise, and constant on-site presence, MCS was able to handle an extraordinary volume of claims under extreme time pressure. Teams and specialists worked across the USA and Europe — directly at the marinas, on the ground, and even on the water — ensuring fast communication and structured solutions throughout the process.

With a cumulative loss of this size, the entire market was involved: insurers, brokers, and private individuals alike. Yet even in the face of overwhelming stress and complexity, the response remained fully connected, efficient, and solution-driven.

A once-in-a-generation event — mastered through experience, resilience, and true international collaboration.

Boat electronics are becoming increasingly complex – and that’s exactly why we invest in the continuous training of our surveyors.

In Lübeck, together with strong partners, we delivered hands-on training, testing, and in-depth technical sessions.
So our customers can rely on one thing above all else:

precise assessments, transparent reports, and fast decisions.

Because in the event of a claim, technical understanding down to the smallest detail matters: onboard electrical systems (12V/24V/230V), battery and charging systems, fusing and cable cross-sections, typical fault patterns such as voltage drops, contact resistance, or short circuits – and, above all, a clean, traceable diagnosis instead of assumptions.

This is how reports are created that are not only fast, but technically sound and reliable.

After a 20-meter sailing yacht capsized on a remote marina site in Panama, the insurer requested immediate support from MCS Marine Claims Service.
The location, limited local resources, and the urgency of the situation required rapid and coordinated action.

Operational fluids were leaking, creating an environmental risk, while rainwater ingress threatened further consequential damage.
Within 24 hours, our team was on site to stabilize the situation and mitigate additional loss.

Initial operations focused on the safe recovery of the damaged rig, followed by the development of a step-by-step salvage plan to upright and secure the vessel.
Time zone differences added another layer of complexity: while critical lifting decisions had to be taken on site with the crane standing by, Europe was in the middle of the night.

While the insurer relied on MCS to act, technical coordination and decision-making continued overnight — including support from Hamburg — ensuring uninterrupted progress.

Fire incident in Palma

Following a fire incident involving a motor yacht in Palma, our team was involved in the overall response operation.

While the destroyed yacht itself was not part of our mandate, we were instructed to inspect and survey neighboring vessels affected by the incident.

The investigation into the fire cause is currently being conducted by specialist fire experts.
Upon completion of the cause analysis, we will proceed with damage assessments, scope-of-repair evaluations, and the development of technically and economically viable repair options for the affected yachts.

A major transition is happening in the yacht market — and it’s reaching smaller boats now.

What used to be mechanical steering cables and shift systems is increasingly turning into fly-by-wire / digital control: turning the wheel creates an electrical signal, sent through wiring to systems that steer and shift.

This technology is already common on outboard setups and is growing fast on inboard engines too.

For us at Marine Claims Service, this shift matters: fewer mechanical parts, but more electronics, sensors and control units — which changes how failures happen, how issues are diagnosed, and how claims are handled after an incident.

We spoke with from about the WOY 26 — a modern daysailer built with a clear focus on sustainability: wood instead of GRP and smart, responsible material choices.

For us at Marine Claims Service, these innovations are more than a trend — they directly impact repairability, damage assessment, and long-term durability. Different materials mean different failure patterns, claim scenarios, and solutions.

Great to see boatbuilding moving toward smarter, more sustainable construction — with real benefits in practice.

We spoke with about a really smart innovation they’re showcasing together with : model construction using corrugated cardboard instead of polystyrene (Styrofoam).

Less waste, easier disposal, and a real step toward more sustainable formwork solutions — not just “green” marketing. 🌱
Sometimes the simplest material swap can make the biggest difference.
