Studio Miessen

Studio Miessen Studio Miessen is based in Berlin. From our international network of experts covering diverse practices, we provide customized approaches for each project.

Collaborative agency for spatial strategy and cultural analysis, conceptualizing, developing and affiliating change through research, design, writing, curatorial and educational activities, and consulting. We are a decentrally-organized group of architects, designers, curators and writers currently working on projects in Europe, Asia, North America and the Middle East. Interested in the deployment

of Critical Spatial Practice as a methodology, we collaboratively work and consult on conceptualizing and implementing architecture on all scales as well as projects that include spatial design, strategic frameworks, research, curatorial and discursive activities in order to create the most suitable packages for our clients. Studio Miessen works with individuals, collectives, institutions and organizations and specializes in spatially rethinking, redesigning and promoting cultural institutions. We also work closely with artists, who we assist to realize small-to-large-scale spatial ideas and support them in realizing exhibitions and large-scale institutional shows. Our work also includes self-initiated activities and projects that span from physical construction to writing and criticism. Our practice is based on dialogue. We prefer to go through the entire process of a project with our clients – from beginning to end. But we can also help you redefine an existing space or project. At first, we listen.

Markus Miessen will discuss his latest research project, the edited volume Agonistic Assemblies.

Agonistic Assemblies asks: how can spaces—both physical and virtual—be envisaged to create publics? How is collectivity and society being generated spatially and in terms of policy? How do we “practice” society as a bodily, spatial form, and how does this practice contribute to spatial justice? Are there specific spatial settings that can intensify these practices? What kind of spatial design can we imagine as platforms for change?

Agonistic Assemblies features contributions by: Zahra Ali Baba, Ole Bouman, Francelle Cane, Giancarlo De Carlo, Claudia Chwalisz, Kenny Cupers, Anne Davidian, Diane E. Davis, Erhard Eppler, Jesko Fezer, Joseph Grima, Amelie Klein, Charlotte Malterre-Barthes, Florian Malzacher, Markus Miessen, Chantal Mouffe, Gustav Kjær Vad Nielsen, César Reyes Nájera, Dennis Pohl, Patricia Reed, Vera Sacchetti, Nikolaj Schultz, Rahel Süss, Pelin Tan, Roemer Van Toorn, David Mulder Van Der Vegt, Sarah M. Whiting, and Mirjam Zadoff

Markus Miessen is an architect, writer, director of Studio Miessen, and Professor of Urban Transformation at the University of Luxembourg, where he holds the chair of the City of Esch, associated with the master programme “Architecture, European Urbanisation, Globalisation.”
