Today is the last day of the Oslo Architecture Triennale 2026, where we asked the question: ‘What if Nature Comes First’?

Together with Transborder Studio we exhibited our READY CLAY ONE project in a 1:50 rammed earth model made of local clay from Oslo. The model represents the first step in our development strategy for Nils Hansens vei 9–11, exploring how excavated soil from the site can be the backbone of the new development.

READY CLAY ONE is a material-driven vision that explores how clay beneath the site can be reimagined as a resource for both buildings, landscape, and social activities. A lush nursery of locally grown trees will form the neighbourhood’s central common and meeting place – truly putting nature first for the benefit og people and planet.

Nils Hansens vei 9–11 is being developed for Bertel O. Steen Eiendom AS. The rammed-earth model was produced by Maxwell Rodencal at RÅ Materialer / Earth Collective.

How can architecture make everyday life in a hospital a little better, healthier, and safer – for both staff, patients, and relatives?

The new Stavanger University Hospital – designed by SLA, Nordic Office of Architecture Norway, and AART – is one of Scandinavia’s largest healthcare construction projects. To create a hospital that feels safe and welcoming, daylight, proximity to nature and generous spaces for pauses and resting have been central design principles.

Lush courtyards and urban spaces ensure a human scale, offer places to pause, and provide a strong, continuous connection to nature.

At the same time, single-patient rooms provide privacy and calm, while shared spaces and common areas offer opportunities for both social interaction and retreat, depending on individual needs.

The project was developed for Stavanger universitetssjukehus in close collaboration with Nordic Office of Architecture, AART, COWI , Helse Vest, and KORO.

Next week is Oslo Urban Week! And what a week we've got in store for you!

This year, we're designing Oslo Urban Week's main stage together with our friends OMA, Agaia, Vestre, Plantinor and Oslotrær! Devised as a 'Public Life Lab' on the rooftop of Trefoldighetskirken, the stage creates a temporary urban forest with pop-up cafes, hangout spots, and views of the city – as well as a joint gathering space for talks, lectures and conversations throughout the week.

In the 'Public Life Lab', each day from 12:00-12:30 we will be hosting a series of talks under the theme 'The Right to Nature.' Here we set our sights on Oslo's many forgotten restarealer and ask how we can develop them into a more nature-based and inclusive city for all, together with politicians, NGOs, activists, and municipalities.

During the week, we will also host a series af city walks in Oslo's new government quarter focusing on artwork, lighting and new urban connections.

Wednesday at 9-10:30 you can also join our event 'Mer åpenhet!? Byrom i regjeringskvartalet' where we, together with our friends Nordic Office of Architecture Norway and Bjørbekk & Lindheim landskapsarkitekter, will take you behind the scenes and explore some of the many key design decisions that shaped Oslo's new central neighbourhood.

As August draws to a close, we look back upon a beautiful first summer of Norway’s NEW GOVERNMENT QUARTER in Oslo.

By introducing a coherent sequence of art-filled streets, plazas and green spaces, the project transforms what was once a disconnected governmental district into a walkable civic neighbourhood.

A defining feature of our design is the replacement of visible fortifications with integrated urban design – creating a secure yet open and inviting government quarter where a rich public life can unfold for all.

“All of the project's security measures are embedded directly within the public realm, creating protection without the sense of barriers. Now people are sitting up against the government buildings while eating their lunch – which is all the more amazing given that the very same buildings so recently were the victims of a horrendous terror attack,” says SLA Lead Designer and Associate Partner, E.C. Forfang.

The project is designed together with our friends Bjørbekk & Lindheim landskapsarkitekter, our client Statsbygg, and our design team Nordic Office of Architecture Norway, Haptic Architects, AS Scenario interiørarkitekter MNIL, I-d. Interiørarkitektur & design AS, COWI, Asplan Viak AS, Ramboll, and Aas-Jakobsen AS.

Greetings from high above the Arctic Circle, in the stunning landscape of the Lofoten Islands.

Here, SLA is helping expand the famous NORWEGIAN SCENIC ROUTES with a rethinking of the rest area at Hattneset.

Our nature-based intervention will be rooted in the landscape itself – enhancing the experience of the place and creating opportunities for closer encounters with nature, using the materials already present on site.

Our landscape architects, Aaste Gulden Sakya, Patrick Warshawski, and Helle Strandhagen, recently spent a few days there: working with 1:1 drawings, marking every tree to keep or move, watching sea eagles above the site, analyzing soil samples, and refining the design in the field.

The project is being developed in collaboration with our great client, Statens vegvesen.

Some good Friday news, involving the fastest animal on Earth:

There are peregrine falcon chicks in the nesting box at Herlev Hospital! With only 10–15 breeding pairs in Denmark, this is quite a sensation.

Back in 2014, while designing the landscape for the New Herlev Hospital, SLA proposed a nature-based alternative to bird spikes on the new buildings: Making room for birds of prey instead.

Hence, DOF BirdLife (Dansk Ornitologisk Forening) installed a falcon nesting box, high on the original hospital tower, giving peregrine falcons an undisturbed place to breed while helping keep the local pigeon population in check. A win-win solution!

And just how fast can a peregrine falcon fly, you might wonder? Up to 390 km/h (240 mph) in a dive💥

Exciting news! Yesterday, our TINGBJERG development project received the City of Copenhagen’s Architecture Prize 2026.

The award highlights the project’s careful long-term plan for densification and revitalization that meticulously knits 1,000 new homes into the existing fabric – strengthening the connection between homes and landscape, activating shared spaces, and enhancing both nature experiences, biodiversity and safety.

As lead planners and landscape architects, SLA has worked with the transformation of Tingbjerg for more than 8 years, with a strong focus on reviving Tingbjerg’s original values of community and nature while preserving the neighborhood’s unique architectural heritage.

Congratulations to the entire team: Urban Partners, Boligselskabet SAB, fsb, Københavns Kommune, and our great co-designers Tegnestuen Vandkunsten – responsible for what must be the nicest new affordable rowhouses in Copenhagen.
