“A school is not just a building. It’s the first place a child learns to trust.”
– Michael Reiter, Head of Press and Culture at Den Tyske Ambassade i Danmark

Last week, BLOXHUB had the pleasure of hosting the Copenhagen edition of , bringing together international experts to discuss the future of school learning as a dynamic place for learning, community and sustainability.

It was a day backed with keynote speeches, panel conversations and interactive workshops.

A few key themes stood out:
1️⃣ Schools as community hubs
The most inspiring projects showed how schools can serve as shared spaces that bring together learning, culture, recreation, and neighborhood life.

2️⃣ Schools can catalyze local development
When designed as open and connected spaces, schools help strengthen communities, reduce barriers, and create more inclusive neighborhoods.

3️⃣ Sustainability must be built in from day one
From circular construction to adaptable design, sustainability was discussed as a core requirement.

4️⃣ Participation creates better schools
The strongest projects involved students, teachers, and local communities in the design process, creating spaces that better support learning, wellbeing, and belonging.

A big thank you to Kirsten Jung and the SCHULBAU team for creating space for these important conversations.

If you’d like to continue the discussion, you can meet our colleague Christoffer ([email protected]) at SCHULBAU Cologne this September. Check out for further details.

“Exchanges like these are very important because it’s very easy to stay in our local bubbles of the same ecosystem, same ideas, same beliefs.”
- Alejandro Jaramillo, Global Associate Director, ShelterTech

Last month, BLOXHUB welcomed a delegation of leaders from Colombia, brought together by Comfama, for a week of learning, dialogue, and exploration in Copenhagen.

Representing sectors including construction, banking, compensation funds, and public institutions, the delegation came together to examine how cities, businesses, and institutions can collaborate to create lasting social and environmental impact.

💡 Three key takeaways from the week:

1️⃣ Trust and collaboration are the foundation of change
Meaningful transformation happens when diverse stakeholders align around shared goals and work across sectors.

2️⃣ Shared ownership drives long-term impact
Sustainable solutions require commitment, governance, financing, and partnerships that can endure over time.

3️⃣ Systems thinking unlocks innovation
The most resilient cities are built through connected approaches, curiosity, and a willingness to challenge assumptions.

One of the strongest lessons? Successful models cannot simply be copied and pasted. The real value lies in adapting insights to local realities and strengthening the capacity to lead change from within.

A big thank you to Comfama, Jorge Londoño Mejía, Francesco Maria Orsini, the delegation participants, and all the BLOXHUB members and partners who shared their knowledge and experiences throughout the week.

The future of sustainable urban development will be built through collaboration across borders, sectors, and disciplines.

Different disciplines and different perspectives are key if we are to develop human-centric urban spaces, not least when we plan and develop counterterrorism according to Stine Ilum, Ph.D. at and , Department of Anthropology, and part of the Smart City Research Network. Through her research, she poses answers to the very important question; how are we to create the best possible solutions by combining the technology from the security industry with an understanding of values such as freedom, democracy, security, and openness?

Trained sculptor turned photographer Bay has in this portrait captured Stine surrounded by the rocky granite landscapes of Bornholm - a material reference to the security bollards often used for terrorist security measures of urban spaces. We have interviewed Stine on the professional practice of counterterrorism in Denmark, and on how people as part of their everyday lives experience terror threats, the decisions, and precautions they make, and their perceptions and reactions to counterterrorism installations.

A researcher’s backbone is objectivity and precise communication. Artistic expression is rarely an outlet that researchers make use of, let alone highlight. But why not?

We invited trained sculptor turned photographer to give her artistic take on 7 industrial researchers from the Smart City Research Network. The result is a series of sensuous portraits showcasing the researchers and their research projects in an unconventional and non-academic way.

First up is Postdoc Lara Anne Blasberg, whose project’s objective was to research business model innovation for smart buildings, specifically exploring value propositions for user-centricity and sustainability.

You can read more about Lara’s research project via link in bio.

💚HAPPY 4th ADVENT: Join us for episode 4 in our new podcast series, Circular Passions💚

"You want to make change fast enough? It's simple – just shot down the global economy."

This is a controversial statement, and the person behind it knows so. We are honoured to be joined in this podcast episode by Co-founder and CEO of Miniwiz, arthur huang, a pioneer within the field of circularity and upcycling. This proclamation might seem harsh, but it is a profound testament to his passion and optimism for the global green transition. Put in another way: We can already do a lot, we just need to do it.

Join us when we ask Arthur about the challenges of circularity, the importance of visionary education, and the role of the economy and tools such as Life Cycle Analysis (LCA).

Guest: Arthur Huang , Co-founder & CEO, MINIWIZ

Interview by Pernille Berg, Fil.Dr

The podcast is a shortened and edited version of a BLOXHUB Debate from September 2021.

🌲HAPPY 3rd ADVENT: Join us for episode 3 in our new podcast series, Circular Passions🌲

For sustainable change to happen, you need to be aware of your own role in the transformation and realize that sustainability isn't just an abstract idea, but something that affects you personally. This is what Monica Maria Moeskjær advocates at her work at Danish Design Center; she creates spaces where people let go of their spreadsheets in order to actually come together and face challenges.

Join us in exploring how Monica creates spaces where self-realization can occur, what role the design method plays in process development, and why she is fascinated by Kate Raworth and the Doughnut economic model.

Guest: Monica Maria Moeskær, Head of Cities Program & Design, Danish Design Center.
