Bass Players! Up your game and be the life of the band, not simply serving to provide a low hum. Think Tina Weymouth (Talking Heads,) Karol Kaye, James Jameson, Mingus and be a solid melodic and rhythmic element without being cumbersome or failing to hold down the groove. Be the “ tuned drum” (Ray Brown interview Village Voice, 1985) and learn to deftly employ the “Bass Prerogative.” The bass is hardly the “devil’s work” as it presents an infinite amount of roles and, thus, possibilities that are heavenly to arrange and strategically create parts that work on many rhythmic and harmonic levels.
