We can't wait to finally see it completed and the first test results gathered!!!

340 m² of glulam columns and beams, CLT floor slabs, lightweight timber façades, designed to show what the future of construction could look like: “Build-in-Wood Demonstrator” is the living laboratory to test the promises of the European Build-in-Wood project and of its 21 partners, including Rothoblaas.

Is it true that a modular and technological building made of engineered timber offers exceptional performance in terms of durability, insulation, versatility and also sustainability?

The answer, even if we think we already know it, will come from the data collected by the Demonstrator's "digital twin", which is equipped with sensors to monitor parameters such as moisture content. The system will enable predictive maintenance while generating data to evaluate the effects of technical changes on building performance.

The motto "If we can test it, we can improve it" is one of the many reasons we are taking part in Build-in-Wood.

🌳🌳Hyytiälä Living Lab - A unique research platform for sustainable wooden construction and human wellbeing.🌳🌳



The Hyytiälä Living Lab is located at the Research Station of the University of Helsinki in Hyytiälä, Finland. The building is split into four small pavilions under one connecting roof. The main volume with learning spaces and the restaurant is visible from the entrance driveway, wishing visitors welcome and opening up the activities of the station to the surroundings. The accommodation rooms are each accessible from the terrace, creating the atmosphere of a single outdoor cabin in the woods. A long lifespan of at least 150 years was the starting points for designing the building.



The 2,000 m2 Living Lab is a research object in itself, and forms a platform for multidisciplinary studies of the use and users of wooden buildings. The buildings, constructed in 2023 with engineered wood products CLT and LVL, are providing research opportunities for long-term integrative research. The structural health of wooden construction products is measured in real-time, and pioneering studies on human well-being and the built environment are underway.



The Living Lab collaborates with Oregon State University in USA and the Slovenian InnoRenew Center of Excellence in wood science, and are looking for other interested collaborators.
