We are a Copenhagen-based, international architecture practice with a talent for turning no-nonsense design strategies into captivating environments.

SquareOne is a Copenhagen-based architecture studio which turns no nonsense strategies into captivating environments. If we were actors, we would be underplaying, much like Robert Redford. If we were musicians, we'd repeat and repeat- like Ravel. Or play old music like Jan Johansson does. Still, we'd dare a sudden electric guitar, Ennio Moriconne style. We are looking for such strokes of genius in our architecture - how to creatively cheat in a rule-based game.

We are thrilled to announce that we are a Børsen Gazelle 2025 company, along with less than 1% of Danish companies of all branches.

"No nominations, no judging panels, no subjective evaluations – only figures from four consecutive annual accounts, which must, among other things, demonstrate continuous growth and a 100% increase in revenue. Being named a Børsen Gazelle is not a gift – it is a documented achievement and indisputable recognition of having delivered something that only very few manage to do."

We are developing a senior citizens’ home at the Athens riviera, as part of the social infrastructure within the Ellinikon master plan. Our goal is to create a building that fights loneliness by helping people meet, be active and enjoy nature together.

We have designed a green facade with shading panels which create an ever changing appearance to the building depending on the viewing angle, without compromising its constructability and modularity.

𝐂𝐎𝐌𝐏𝐄𝐓𝐈𝐓𝐈𝐎𝐍 𝐖𝐈𝐍: How can we provide emergency shelter in a circular way, without wasting resources over and over again? With this question in mind, we delved – and won - into the problem of earthquake shelters in Japan at the Phase Free Competition.

Japan is a highly developed economy, with plenty of large scale spaces such as gyms, multipurpose halls, designed also as temporary shelters for earthquake emergencies. It is not atypical that citizens spend up to 1 month at unpleasant living conditions, with no privacy and no sense of family. To address this issue, we combine to iconic Japanese techniques : 𝐭𝐚𝐭𝐚𝐦𝐢, the bamboo mats of 90x180 cm and 𝐨𝐫𝐢𝐠𝐚𝐦𝐢 -the folding technique- to produce elements that can be used a mats or shelves during daily use, but as space dividers and beds during emergencies. The modules fold and click together in various combinations , and with the help of standard single or double bed sheets with elastic rims, we are able to produce minimal homes within a large hall and provide a sense of privacy and belonging.

When the emergency situation is over, the modules can find their place at home once again.

Kostas' key takeaways from the expert panel on sustainability at the Athens Riviera Forum last week :

"Sustainability is about our endurance on the planet as a species, and the endurance of the planet itself. These two have to go hand in hand.
Sustainability is both an ultimate goal and a toolbox, a set of techniques we can apply towards achieving this goal.
But is that enough?
No, it is not enough to “just do it”. As with all things, it is never only what you do, but how you do it. A lot of people can bake, draw, build. But are their products as good, as delightful, as beautiful, as exciting? Do they strike a cord?

I am talking about the art of sustainability.

This is what we do all day at the studio. Think and plan on how to solve important questions of our common future with gusto."

Kostas will be speaking at the Athens Riviera Forum , held at the Four Seasons Hotel between 18 - 20th of June.

Athens metropolitan area has an impressive 60 km coastline. How do we develop it sustainably towards a 24/7, live-work-play environment ? And how do we approach this task with emphasis on creating great urban spaces for both residents and visitors?

Looking forward to discussing this hot topic!
