El Vivarium es un museo de anfibios y reptiles en Quito, Ecuador. Ecuador es uno de los 17 países megadiversos del mundo y tiene la mayor biodiversidad por kilómetro cuadrado de cualquier nación. El Vivarium está ubicado en el Parque Carolina, en una antigua estación de bombeo que fue construida en 1957.

Cuando el Vivarium tomó posesión del edificio en 2002, se llevó a cabo su renovación y ampliación. El edificio tiene actualmente tres funciones programáticas principales: el área de exposición, las oficinas administrativas y los laboratorios.

En el rediseño, las diferentes funciones se definieron y separaron de una forma más clara y lógica. Además de la reorganización del edificio existente, el resumen de diseño del cliente requirió la incorporación de una biblioteca, un auditorio, una cafetería y algunas instalaciones adicionales para el personal. Dicha adición derivó sus proporciones del edificio existente y tiene como objetivo unir a la perfección una forma contemporánea con un lenguaje de diseño más histórico. La configuración existente aisló el Vivarium del resto del parque. Por esta razón, la intervención reuniría el Vivarium con el parque y mejoraría el área circundante. La intención fue crear un entorno estimulante pero armonioso para el personal y los visitantes del Vivarium y del parque.

The Vivarium is a reptile and amphibious creatures museum in Quito, Ecuador. Ecuador is one of 17 megadiverse countries in the world and has the most biodiversity per square kilometre of any nation. The Vivarium is located in Parque Carolina, in an old pump house that was built in 1957.

When the Vivarium took possession of the building in 2002, they conducted a renovation and extension. The building currently has three main programmatic functions; the exhibition area, the administrative offices and the laboratories.

In the re-design, the different functions will be more clearly defined and seperated. In addition to the reorganisation of the existing building, the client's design brief calls for the addition of a library, auditorium, coffee shop and additional staff facilities. The addition derives its proportions from the existing building and aims to seamlessly unite a contemporary form with a more historic design language. The existing configuration isolated the Vivarium from the rest of the park. The intervention would reunite the Vivarium with the park and improve the surrounding area. The intention was to create a stimulating yet harmoniuous environment for the staff and visitors to the Vivarium and park.

La renovación de la sección frontal de Torres de Guápulo tenía como objetivo actualizar el edificio y crear un diálogo más dinámico con la calle. Debido a la filtración de agua en las áreas de estacionamiento y almacenamiento, el cliente solicitó que se eliminen todas las áreas de jardinería y césped. El edificio se encuentra en una ladera, por lo que se propuso una base plana sólida. Al simplificar la forma, el terreno en pendiente se hizo más evidente y la base plana se convirtió en una colección de cajas de piedra. El saliente de entrada en voladizo enfatiza la separación del edificio con la base plana. Al reemplazar la pared adyacente al garaje de estacionamiento con una pared acristalada, la fachada recibe más profundidad y cambia de una estética plana a una forma tridimensional. La naturaleza de la torre que está estructurada por columnas con pisos en voladizo se hace más evidente con este nuevo diseño.

The renovation of the Torres de Guapulo frontal section will update the building and create a more engaging dialogue with the street. Due to water leaking into the parking and storage areas below, the client requested that all landscaping and grassed areas be removed. The context of the building being in the mountains was drawn upon and a solid stone base was proposed. By simplifying the form, the sloping terrain was made more obvious and the base plane became a collection of stone boxes. The cantilevered entry overhang emphasises the separation of the building from the base plane. By replacing the wall adjacent to the parking garage with a glazed curtain wall, the facade is given more depth and changed from a planar aesthetic to a 3 dimensional form. The nature of the tower as being structured by columns with cantilevered floors is made more evident.

La renovación del área de la piscina de las Torres de Guápulo apuntaba a reactivar el espacio y hacerlo un ambiente más agradable para los residentes. La renovación fue diseñada para costar la menor cantidad posible. El principal activo del sitio fue la vista hacia el valle de Cumbayá. Para aprovecharlo, se propuso un área ligeramente elevada. Al elevar 90 cm un área en la sección sur del sitio, se activaría la vista hacia el valle de Cumbayá. Un pequeño pabellón con una pared acristalada se colocó en línea con el muro delimitador. Fue colocado en esta posición para bloquear los fuertes vientos que vienen del valle.

La base del área de la piscina es de hormigón, por lo que fue necesario levantar ciertas secciones para que haya suficiente tierra para las plantas y el pasto. Se incorporó un sistema rentable de pisos de concreto en el lugar. Su naturaleza maleable permite que diseños geométricos se inserten en este nuevo sistema de pisos.

The renovation of the pool area of the Torres de Guapulo would aim to reactivate the space and make it a more pleasant environment for the residents. The renovation was designed to be as low cost as possible to build. The main asset of the site was the view into the Cumbaya Valley. In order to take advantage of it, a slightly raised area was proposed. By raising an area in the southern section of the site by 90cm, the view into the Cumbaya valley would be activated. A small pavilion with a glazed wall was positioned in line with the boundary wall. It was placed in this position in order to block the strong winds that come in from the valley.

The base of the pool area is concrete so it was necessary to raise certain sections in order for there to be sufficent soil for the plants and grass. A cost effective cast in place concrete flooring system was specified. It's maleable nature allowed for geometric patterns to be designed into the floor.

Los Apartamentos Cambridge fueron diseñados para un sitio de 10 000 metros cuadrados en Harare, Zimbabwe. El diseño exigió una densidad máxima y se respondió a un cuidadoso análisis del mercado para determinar el tamaño de edificio y el precio correcto para la clientela.

El complejo consta de 10 unidades de apartamentos y una casa club. Se hizo hincapié en la creación de espacios amplios y de flujo libre que unifiquen el interior y el exterior y brinden una experiencia de vida óptima.

La luz se manipuló y ajustó cuidadosamente según el uso de cada espacio y el efecto atmosférico que se quería obtener. A través de la manipulación y la expresión de los materiales y su naturaleza intrínseca, se creó una arquitectura dinámica y fundamentada. La apreciación del edificio cambia en cada estación y varía dependiendo de la hora del día.

El ambiente jugó un papel fundamental en la disposición del espacio, con un extenso análisis realizado para enfriar y calentar efectivamente el edificio utilizando medios naturales. Durante el invierno, cuando la temperatura cae por debajo del rango de confort humano, el sol penetra en los espacios y calienta los pisos, donde se almacena el calor. Durante el verano, cuando se necesita enfriamiento, el sol está bloqueado. La ventilación cruzada y un sistema de apilamiento que emplea un volumen de doble altura ventilan el edificio. El agua de lluvia se aprovecha y se almacena en cisternas subterráneas. Con el ladrillo y el hormigón armado como materiales estructurales predominantes, se obtiene una forma que obtiene la maximización de las propiedades naturales y los métodos de construcción eficientes de estos sistemas. El objetivo fue crear una entidad que estuviera en armonía con la naturaleza.

The Cambridge Apartments were designed for a 10 000sqm site in Harare. The complex consists of 10 apartment units and a club house. An emphasis was placed on creating expansive, free flowing spaces that unify the interior and exterior and provide for an optimum living experience.

Light was carefully manipulated and adjusted depending on the use of each space and the intended atmospheric effect. A grounded yet dynamic architecture was created through the manipulation and expression of materials and their intrinsic nature. The impression of the building changes with the season and the time of the day.

The environment played a pivotal role in the arrangement of mass, with extensive analysis performed in order to effectively cool and heat the building; using natural means. During the winter, when the temperature falls below the human comfort range, the sun penetrates the spaces and warms the floors, where the heat is stored. During the summer, when cooling is needed, the sun is blocked. Cross ventilation and a stack system employing a double heighted volume ventilate the building. Rain water is harnessed and stored in underground cisterns.

With brick and reinforced concrete as the predominant structural material, the form was largely a result of the maximization of the natural properties and efficient construction methods of these systems.

La residencia de Cedar Street fue diseñada para un clima mediterráneo. Se calienta y enfría pasivamente. Se insertó un patio central para garantizar que todos los espacios tuvieran luz solar. Los materiales naturales se vislumbran a lo largo de la estructura.

The Cedar Street Residence was designed for a mediterranean climate. It is passively heated and cooled. A central courtyard was inserted in order to ensure that all spaces had solar access. Natural materials are expressed throughout.
