Margus Veisveer Art Margus Veisveer Oil Paintings. Artist Margus Veisveer´s oil paintings on canvas. Minu lähenemine on intuitiivne, kuid teadlik.

+30°C? That's not heat, that's the sauna warming up. A real Estonian sauna reaches 100°C, and once it's hot enough, we throw water on the stones to make survival even more interesting. 😄

Estonia's tragedy is that people are not taught how to understand art. This problem starts at an early age and is rooted in the education system. I do not blame individuals for it; the responsibility lies with a society that does not value art highly enough. If people knew how to read and appreciate art, they would also be willing to invest in it. Selling contemporary art in Estonia is an uphill battle, and artists struggle to survive from their profession alone.

Having worked as a teacher, I have seen how eager students are to learn when given the opportunity. They attended classes with curiosity and enthusiasm.

Even students without a natural artistic gift can learn to draw a portrait. Every one of them was able to understand the process and achieve results. It is largely a matter of teaching methods and guidance.

Yet art continues to be treated as something secondary in Estonia. The stereotype of the "poor artist" persists. But if society wants that situation to change, someone must be willing to support artists by buying art. That is my personal view.

There is always a quiet moment before a painting leaves the studio.
Months of thought, silence, struggle and emotion suddenly begin a life elsewhere.
That moment never becomes ordinary.

Three works at “Progetto d’Autore 2026”.

On May 29, the works will be presented at the Carlo Scarpa Hall at MAXXI – National Museum of 21st Century Arts.

Any competition or presentation can only show a very small fragment from a much longer timeline of artistic development. Selections have to be made.

What remains outside the frame are often the most important moments for the artist personally — the quiet discoveries, failed directions, doubts, conversations with oneself while working, and all the things that never become visible in documentation.

Still, every opportunity to step aside for a moment and look at your own work from distance can be valuable. Sometimes we learn something about ourselves through these short periods brought together in one place.

None of these works were started with the idea of being made for this particular context.

And when looking at other artists’ works, none of us really knows beforehand beside which works our own pieces will eventually exist. I cannot compare my paintings to someone else’s work because they come from completely different realities, processes and experiences.

But the place where they are presented becomes shared.

That is maybe what connects artists the most:
not similarity, but coexistence.
Different works, different people, different paths — meeting for a moment in the same space, with viewers who will interpret and experience them in their own way.
