عند تصميم أو تنفيذ شبكة الحماية من الصواعق للمنشآت المعدنية (Steel Structures)، يقع البعض في خطأ "خلط المعادن" دون دراسة ، وتحديداً استخدام النحاس (Copper)مباشرة مع الحديد/الصلب (Steel).

لماذا يُعد هذا المزيج "قنبلة موقوتة" لاستثمارك؟ 💣
الخطورة تكمن في ظاهرة التآكل الجلفاني (Galvanic Corrosion). عندما يتلامس معدنان مختلفان في الجهد الكهربائي (مثل النحاس والحديد) بوجود رطوبة، يتحول الحديد إلى "أنود" ويبدأ في التآكل بسرعة فائقة لصالح النحاس.

النتيجة ؟
1. ضعف الهيكل الإنشائي للمبنى عند نقاط التثبيت.
2. فقدان استمرارية شبكة التأريض والحماية (Loss of Continuity).
3. تكاليف صيانة باهظة واستبدال مبكر لمكونات الشبكة.

Designing a Lightning Protection System (LPS) for a Floating Roof Tank (FRT) with a diameter >60m is a high-stakes challenge.

Add a Cathodic Protection requirement into the mix, and the complexity doubles.

🔍 The Core Challenge
Standard codes like IEC 62305 and NFPA 780 emphasize rapid dissipation of lightning energy to the ground. However, in CP-protected tanks, a direct low-impedance path to a traditional earth grid can "drain" your CP current, leaving your tank vulnerable to corrosion.

Critical Technical Hurdles:
The Moving Target: Maintaining a continuous, low-impedance electrical bond between the floating roof and the tank shell to prevent rim-seal fires.

DC Isolation vs. AC Grounding:
How do you ground lightning strikes (AC/Transient) while keeping the tank isolated for CP (DC)?

Surface Area Dynamics:
On a 60m+ diameter tank, the electromagnetic shielding and potential gradients require precision modeling to avoid side-flashing.

SPD Installation: Why the "50 cm Rule" is Non-Negotiable.** ⚡🔌

Buying a high-quality Surge Protective Device (SPD) is only 50% of the solution. The other 50% depends on how it is installed. In high-frequency lightning impulses, even a few extra centimeters of wire can render your protection useless.

To ensure your sensitive electronics are actually safe, here are the critical DO’s and DON’Ts for SPD installation:

✅ DO: Keep connecting leads as short and straight as possible
Inductance is your biggest enemy. According to IEC 60364-5-53, the total lead length (L = A + B + C) should ideally be less than 50 cm. Every extra meter of lead can add about 1000V to the protection level (U_p) during a surge, potentially exceeding the insulation withstand voltage of your equipment.
✅ DO: Coordinate your SPDs (Type 1, 2, and 3)
Protection is a layered strategy. Ensure proper coordination between the Type 1 SPD at the main service entrance (to handle direct strikes) and Type 2/3 SPDs near sensitive sub-panels. This ensure the energy is dissipated progressively without damaging the downstream devices.

❌ DON’T: Create "Inductive Loops" in the panel
Avoid bundling the protected (clean) wires with the unprotected (dirty) incoming lines. If they run parallel or too close, the surge can "jump" via electromagnetic coupling from the input wire to the output wire, bypassing the SPD entirely. Keep them physically separated.
❌ DON’T: Forget the dedicated Overcurrent Protection
An SPD is a sacrificial device. Always install the recommended backup fuse as specified by the manufacturer. Without proper overcurrent protection, a sustained overvoltage could lead to an SPD failure that takes down the entire distribution board.

External LPS: Precision is the difference between Protection and Disaster ⚡🏗️

In the world of External Lightning Protection, "close enough" isn't good enough. A single high-impedance joint or a poorly routed down conductor can lead to side-flashing or structural damage during a strike.

To ensure your facility's external shield is up to code (IEC 62305 / NFPA 780), keep these " specialized DO’s and DON’Ts " in mind:

✅ DO: Integrate early in the design phase
The most effective (and cost-efficient) Lightning Protection Systems are those integrated during the architectural stage. This allows for concealed conductors and utilized structural steel as part of the down-conductor system without compromising aesthetics.
✅ DO: Follow the "Protection Angle" or "Rolling Sphere" Method strictly.
Don't just place air terminals randomly. Use the Rolling Sphere Method (RSM) based on the Class of LPS (I to IV) required for the structure. This ensures that every square meter of the roof—especially corners and equipment like HVAC units—falls within the "zone of protection."

❌ DON’T: Ignore the "Separation Distance" (S)
A common mistake in External LPS is installing conductors too close to internal metallic parts or electrical lines. Without calculating and maintaining the proper separation distance, you risk a "Side Flash"—where the lightning jumps from the external conductor to internal systems, causing fire or equipment failure.
❌ DON’T: Mix dissimilar metals
One of the most common failures we see is "galvanic corrosion." Connecting aluminum components directly to copper without proper bimetallic transitions will lead to system failure within months. Safety shouldn't have a shelf life.
