Grand Egyptian Museum: The Global Network Proposal
Since the Grand Egyptian Museum (GEM) is currently in the spotlight, I’m dusting off our 24 years old proposal from the 2001 competition!
The proposal was published in the official competition book amongst selected projects, participated in the 6th International Conference of Mediterranean Architecture in Ischia, Italy 2006, and was featured in El Benaa El Araby architecture magazine April 2007.
Our vision wasn’t about designing a single, grand building; it was about creating a global cultural operating system for Egyptian history. My core proposal was to connect the new GEM in Giza with every single Egyptian museum and collection across the globe; in addition to the most important tombs & temples across Egypt.
Imagine the GEM not just as a location, but as the unifying digital and curatorial hub—a global network linking the artifacts in Cairo, London, Berlin, New York, and beyond. This was a plan to build a truly interconnected, unified global museum experience, making the history of ancient Egypt accessible as one complete narrative.
It felt like a crazy idea then, but in today's digital & VR/AR world, it’s more relevant than ever. What do you think—is a global, networked museum the future?
