🔍 Understanding Power Factor – A Key to Electrical Efficiency

Power factor (PF) is a critical but often overlooked indicator in electrical systems. It represents the ratio between real power (used to perform work) and apparent power (total power supplied).

👉 PF = Real Power (kW) / Apparent Power (kVA)
A power factor of 1 is ideal — it means all the power is being effectively used.
But in reality, inductive loads like motors and transformers cause the power factor to drop.

📉 Why does this matter?

Low PF increases electricity bills due to utility penalties

It overloads cables, transformers, and switchgear

It reduces the overall capacity of your power system

💡 How to fix it?
At ETA Electric, we use a mix of solutions:
🔹 Active Harmonic Filters
🔹 Automatic Capacitor Banks
🔹 Real-time PF Monitoring Systems

✅ Result: Optimized performance, reduced energy losses, and extended equipment life.

⚡ What Are Harmonics — and Why Should You Care? 🔍

Harmonics are voltage or current distortions caused by non-linear loads like VFDs, LED lights, and computers.
They silently damage your power system, leading to:

❌ Overheating in transformers & cables
❌ Frequent breaker tripping
❌ Reduced equipment life
❌ Unexpected downtime

🎯 The Solution?
Installing Active Harmonic Filters (AHFs) reduces distortion, improves power factor, and protects your system.

At ETA Electric, we provide tailored power quality solutions that comply with international standards (like IEEE 519), helping you achieve a cleaner, more stable electrical environment.

Solving Power Quality Challenges with Smart Solutions ⚡

We recently tackled a challenging case at Kigali Bulk Water Station for our valued customer Metito Utilities, where harmonic distortion and a poor power factor were affecting system performance and energy efficiency.

By installing an Active Harmonic Filter (AHF) from Merus Power, we successfully:

- Reduced harmonic distortion from 37% to just 5%, bringing it within IEEE standards

- Improved the power factor to above 92%

- Boosted the reliability and efficiency of the overall power system

🔌 The result? A more stable, efficient, and compliant electrical network—well-equipped to support expanding operational demands.

⚡ Smarter power. Stronger performance.

🔌 The Effect of Harmonics on Power Factor ⚡

In modern electrical systems, maintaining an efficient power factor is essential for reducing energy losses and avoiding penalties from utilities. However, harmonics—often generated by nonlinear loads like variable frequency drives, LED lighting, and computers—can significantly distort the power system and reduce power quality.

📉 So, how do harmonics affect power factor?
Power Factor is often thought of as the cosine of the phase angle between voltage and current (displacement power factor), but in real-world systems, Total Power Factor is influenced by both:

Displacement (DPF): caused by phase shift,

Distortion (THD): caused by harmonics.

Harmonics increase the apparent power (S) without increasing the real power (P), which leads to a lower total power factor (TPF). This means the system draws more current for the same amount of useful power — leading to:

🔺 Overloaded transformers and cables

🔻 Reduced system efficiency

⚠ Higher utility bills and possible penalties

🛠 What can be done?
Conduct a harmonic analysis to measure THD.

Install passive or active harmonic filters.

Use power factor correction devices compatible with harmonic conditions.

✅ Better harmonic control = higher power factor = more efficient, cost-effective power systems.

🔧 At ETA Electric, we help businesses optimize their power systems by diagnosing harmonic issues and designing tailored solutions for Power Quality and Harmonics improvement.

Power Quality Measurements for Al Dahra’s Land Reclamation Project 🌱

We’re excited to share a new milestone! ✅ Our team at ETA has successfully completed comprehensive power quality measurements for Al Dahra, a leader in land reclamation and agriculture. 🌍

As part of their commitment to sustainability and operational excellence, we assessed their facilities to ensure maximum efficiency and protection against electrical disturbances that could impact their critical work.

Why Power Quality Matters in Land Reclamation: ✔️ Reliability: Consistent power quality is essential for irrigation systems, machinery, and all equipment involved in land reclamation.
✔️ Energy Efficiency: Monitoring and optimizing power quality helps cut energy waste, saving costs and reducing environmental impact.
✔️ Minimizing Downtime: Power issues like voltage drops or harmonic distortion can cause serious equipment failures — early detection is key to keeping projects on track.

Using advanced power quality analyzers, we measured vital parameters like voltage unbalance, harmonic distortions, Total Harmonic Distortion (THD), and Power Factor to ensure smooth, reliable operations.

🔧 By identifying and addressing potential issues early, Al Dahra is boosting both operational efficiency and their long-term sustainability efforts.

We’re proud to support Al Dahra’s mission to transform desert land into productive agriculture. 🌾

🙏 A heartfelt thank you to Eng. Sameh Sayed from Al Dahra for his incredible support and collaboration throughout this project!
