BAS SMETS: "The time for meetings was short but there was a real generosity of intelligence. At the time, I was working with Michel Desvigne in Paris and I only had my four hour train ride to draw on a tracing paper roll what I was presenting the next day. I really learned to sketch at the IAUG. The sketch, not as a means of representation but as a tool for reflection: the first manifestation of a concept or an intuition".

BAS SMETS is an architect and has been leading the Bureau Bas Smets in Brussels for 10 years. He studied Architecture and Landscape at the IAUG postgraduate program between 2001 and 2003. •

GREG BUSSIEN: "During the studio project days, sketches were often drawn on the blackboards. The following week, during discussions between theoreticians, one could refer to the traces of chalk drawings still visibles. Coversely, when a teacher wrote terms on the board during his lesson, we could come back to it a week later during a project review".

GREG BUSSIEN is an architect with a diploma from the Institut of Architecture of the University of Geneva (IAUG). Since 2003, he has been a partner in the architectural firm Atelier Descombes Rampini. He studied Architecture and Landcsape at the IAUG between 1999 and 2001. •

• "THE GENEVA SCHOOL" TESTIMONIES:
ALAIN LÉVEILLÉ: "At the moment, I am working on the plan of «public areas and sites to be classified» of 1936. I redraw where the grid passes and how it interacts with the existing. This plan is full of finesse and attention to the territory: the slightest inflection, the slightest hedge... As Elena Cogato Lanza showed in her thesis, among the four authors of the plan: Maurice Braillard, head of the Department of public works, Albert Bodmer, head of the Urban Planning Department, it is the architects and planners Hans Bernoulli et Arnold Hoechel who are the real protagonists. Of course I can’t prove it but I’m almost certain that first of all, there is the morphological aspect which goes to Hoechel, a meticulous and attentive architect. And at the other end, there is Bernoulli, a Basel socialist and theorist of the municipalisation of the soil. Rather than expropriating the entire canton, one or the other, perhaps Bernoulli, proposed to trace over the entire territory a grid that covers the woods, the watercourses, etc. What remains outside the grid is the private domain. These are the large agricultural lands, urban blocks and isolated housing colonies. The mesh remains the public domain. This is what ultimately makes it possible to master the shape and distribution of the territory. This plan is incredibly attentive to the context".

ALAIN LÉVEILLÉ is an architect. He was Corboz’s teaching assistant at the University of Montréal (Canada), where he taught from 1967 to 1980. He also taught at the École Architecture, Université Genève, EAUG and the Institut of Architecture, University of Geneva, IAUG (Swizerland) between 1973 and 2007. He was the director of the Center of Research for the Urban Renovation (CRR) in Geneva until 2009. •

• "THE GENEVA SCHOOL" TESTIMONIES:
ALAIN LÉVEILLÉ: "André Corboz has traveled through all the disciplines of Architecture, Territory, or even Painting. When we were setting up the 3rd cycle of « Architecture and Landscape » (at the Institut of Architecture, University of Geneva, IAUG, Switzerland), he was often there with us. But already long before, I thought that our « Atlas of the Genevan Territory » (CRR/EAUG, 1993) had a connection with his book about the « Invention of Carouge » (1968). We overlayed the cadastres in search of the permanences. Basically, it was the same idea, the one that the Site informes the Project in a very unique way. I think that if there is a specificity, a type, or a Genevan School, it would be this one. And I would say Corboz was there for a reason.

« The Institut (IAUG) postulated that the Project was at the center of the teaching system. The 2nd cycle students had to carry out simultaneously two projects from two of the four disciplinar lines : Architecture, Urbanism, Preservation and Landscape ».
« We have to project to understand, as we beleive the project is a tool for knowledge of the territory» ".

LAURENT BADOUX is an architect graduated at the Institute of Architecture, University of Geneva, Switzerland (IAUG). He is the project manager in the office of urban planning in DALE, Départment de l’aménagement du logement et de l’environnement, Geneva, Switzerland.
