Founded in 2016 in Austin, Texas, we are an international design atelier based in Barcelona, Spain. We are 100% woman-owned, with a young and dynamic team that cares deeply about ethical practices, gender, race, and ethnic equality for all. Highly collaborative and communicative, members of the tensile team work, travel and draw inspiration from all corners of the globe. The firm specifically cult

ivates clients from all cultures and backgrounds and is excited by the continental examples of people, personalities and desires for how to live. The firm’s design approach is to utilize elements of the past in order to elevate the present and future. Socially, culturally, politically and fiscally the firm pushes projects from the beginning to be as sustainable as possible. At the same time, a playful injection of nostalgia, memories, dreams and futuristic ideas is allowed to permeate the initial design process. The firm’s guided intent has been to tackle all scopes of projects and scales of design—whether at the scale of the cup or vessel, the scale of fashion, or the scale of architecture—even the scale of a whole community. At its core, JSDS revels in the academic, futuristic and infinite; design is a paradox so that we may see the world more clearly. The firm seeks clients who are risk-takers and visionaries—contact us today for a free consultation.

The Beehive: a boutique hotel experience nestled in the natural beauty of Fredericksburg. This hotel concept is a nod to the formal composition of a beehive, opening and closing to serve as light filters, shading structure, a guardrail, and thresholds.

The oxidised metal panels conform to a contrasting hexagonal wood building envelope. In the back, the hive unfolds to give way to views of the creek, and a sweet hot tub.

Very excited to share the work we’ve been creating for the Maasai community in Kenya. This project aims to create safe and sanitary living environments for women and their children, and to empower the residents by enabling them to build vernacular style homes with innovative techniques.

The buildings retain traditional form with extrusions for water control, latrines for all homes, community spaces, and spatial configuration which reflects the cultural way of movement through space.

We studied cultural patterns of behavior and longstanding traditions to ensure a culturally sensitive plan, and look forward to engaging the community further.

Great work by Lynette Masai and Salma Yahya.

Commissioned by Edna Lenku, First Lady Kajiado & Olkejuado Foundation

Many people ask how JSDS first got involved in the Lagos architecture scene. It all started in 2014 with this temporary exhibition structure, commissioned by the famous performance artist and co-managed by the late and great Burns Effiom.

The structure was designed to utilize local bamboo and showcase a series of artists, curated by Ines Valle and .

It was an absolute honor to participate in this project, and from here, create forever dear contacts in Lagos, which I consider my second home.

More AI magic for a project in Kenya serving the Maasai community. We were approached by a local leader to help reimagine more efficient building techniques and sanitary systems while honoring the vernacular language and cultural customs. Largely still a nomadic community, the Maasai live in clusters. The goal is to build 1000 homes that empower the Maasai, with a focus on elevating the lives of women and children. More on this soon!
