🔥 𝐓𝐎𝐎𝐋𝐁𝐎𝐗 𝐓𝐀𝐋𝐊: 𝐘𝐎𝐔𝐑 𝐂𝐇𝐈𝐌𝐍𝐄𝐘 𝐂𝐎𝐔𝐋𝐃 𝐁𝐄 𝐖𝐎𝐑𝐊𝐈𝐍𝐆 𝐀𝐆𝐀𝐈𝐍𝐒𝐓 𝐘𝐎𝐔!
A chimney isn't simply a pipe through the roof or wall.
For a wood burner to work properly, heat, draught, airflow, insulation, fuel and correct installation all have to work together.
And here's where things get interesting… 👇
🌡️ 𝙄𝙉𝙎𝙐𝙇𝘼𝙏𝙄𝙊𝙉 — 𝙆𝙀𝙀𝙋𝙄𝙉𝙂 𝙏𝙃𝙀 𝙃𝙀𝘼𝙏 𝙒𝙃𝙀𝙍𝙀 𝙄𝙏 𝙈𝘼𝙏𝙏𝙀𝙍𝙎
Your flue gases need to stay hot enough to rise effectively.
If a flue isn't properly insulated, those gases can cool too quickly. As they cool, they don't rise as effectively, reducing the natural draw of the chimney.
That can mean:
➡️ Poorer draw
➡️ Less efficient combustion
➡️ More smoke and deposits
➡️ Greater potential for tar and creosote build-up
💧 𝙏𝙃𝙀 𝘾𝙃𝙄𝙈𝙉𝙀𝙔 “𝙎𝙒𝙀𝘼𝙏𝙄𝙉𝙂”
When hot combustion gases meet a cold flue, moisture can condense inside it — something often described as the chimney “sweating.”
That moisture can contribute to the formation of tar and creosote deposits.
And once those deposits start accumulating, you can potentially end up with:
➡️ Reduced flue capacity
➡️ Poorer draw
➡️ Blockages
➡️ Increased chimney-fire risk 🔥
🪵 𝙄𝙩'𝙨 𝙣𝙤𝙩 𝙟𝙪𝙨𝙩 𝙩𝙝𝙚 𝙘𝙝𝙞𝙢𝙣𝙚𝙮 - 𝙄𝙩'𝙨 𝙬𝙝𝙖𝙩 𝙮𝙤𝙪 𝙥𝙪𝙩 𝙞𝙣 𝙩𝙝𝙚𝙧𝙚
Wood that contains too much moisture has to use part of the fire's energy simply to evaporate that water.
That means a cooler, less efficient burn, more smoke and potentially more creosote formation.
For good burning, properly seasoned firewood should generally be around 20% moisture content or less.
And don't just take the seller's word for it!
🔥 Split it. Stack it. Keep it ventilated and protected from rain. Then test it with a moisture meter.
The moisture reading from the freshly split inside of the log is much more useful than testing the dry-looking outside.
Because wood that looks dry isn't necessarily dry enough to burn.
💨 𝘾𝙊𝙇𝘿 𝘼𝙄𝙍 𝘼𝙉𝘿 𝘽𝘼𝘿𝙇𝙔 𝙎𝙀𝘼𝙇𝙀𝘿 𝙅𝙊𝙄𝙉𝙏𝙎
A correctly installed flue needs the appropriate tightness and correctly fitted connections.
Unwanted air entering the system can interfere with the intended airflow and chimney performance, while leaking joints can allow combustion products to escape.
And this brings us to one of the stranger things that can be found in an installation…
🙃 ¡𝙥𝙪𝙣𝙤ɹɐ ʎɐʍ ƃ𝙪𝙤ɹʍ ǝɥʇ 𝙥ǝʇʇıɟ ǝ𝙙ı𝙙 ǝɥʇ
Yes REALLY. Some stove pipes have been fitted upside down.
Some stove connector pipes have a specific direction in which the joints should be assembled.
If they're installed incorrectly, liquid or condensed creosote can potentially run towards — and escape through — the joints.
Instead of staying contained inside the flue, you can end up with black, sticky tar leaking from your chimney connections.
It's not just unsightly.
🚨 It's a sign that something deserves investigating.
🌬️ 𝙏𝙃𝙀 𝘾𝙃𝙄𝙈𝙉𝙀𝙔 𝙏𝙊𝙋 — 𝙒𝙃𝙀𝙍𝙀 𝙏𝙃𝙀 𝙒𝙄𝙉𝘿 𝘾𝘼𝙉 𝘾𝙃𝘼𝙉𝙂𝙀 𝙀𝙑𝙀𝙍𝙔𝙏𝙃𝙄𝙉𝙂
You can have a perfectly good fire, a hot flue and a correctly installed chimney…
…and still have problems at the top.
Wind doesn't simply travel past your chimney.
As it moves over roofs, walls and other structures, it can create areas of turbulence and changing air pressure around the chimney termination.
Get the position or termination wrong and the wind can interfere with the natural upward flow of the flue gases — and in some conditions can even create downdraught or blowback.
The symptoms can include:
➡️ Smoke being pushed back towards the stove
➡️ Poor or unstable draw
➡️ Difficulty lighting or maintaining the fire
➡️ Smoke entering the room when conditions are windy
This is one reason why chimney height, position and the design of the terminal/cowl matter.
A chimney that works beautifully on a calm day can behave very differently when the wind starts doing its thing. 🌬️
And that's where inspection matters.
Because a chimney can look perfectly acceptable from the outside while having:
❌ Poor insulation
❌ Incorrectly assembled joints
❌ Inadequate sealing
❌ Excessive cooling
❌ Wet or poorly seasoned fuel being burned
❌ Wind-related downdraught
❌ Poor draw
❌ Tar and creosote accumulation
A chimney isn't just “a hole for the smoke to get out.”
It's a carefully balanced system.

💨 GET THE DRAW RIGHT.
🪵 BURN THE RIGHT FUEL.
🧱 GET THE INSTALLATION RIGHT.
Because when your chimney is involved, “it seems to work” isn't quite the same thing as “it's working safely.”
