They said it wouldn’t last... But 17 years later, this green wall is still thriving!

Most people think vertical gardens don’t work in the long run.

That’s because they’ve heard about the ones that failed—not the ones that succeeded.

But here’s the truth - When done right, green walls can last for decades and bring massive benefits to our cities.

Take this project, for example. Installed in 2008 in Aix-en-Provence, France , it has thrived for 17 years, transforming a boring concrete bridge into a lush, living ecosystem.

And the impact? Mind-blowing:

✅ Cools the city: Lowers temperatures by 5-10°C
✅ Reduces noise: Cuts traffic noise by up to 40%

700 years ago, people in the desert cooled buildings by up to 12°C—without electricity.

They built windcatchers (called Badgir in Farsi).

These are Tall towers that:

◾ Caught the cool breeze from the sky
◾ Funneled the air through underground tunnels where the air cooled naturally.
◾ Pushed the cool air back up into homes and public spaces.

The result? Comfortable indoor temperatures in one of the hottest climates on Earth—using zero energy.

Some systems were even advanced enough to make ice in the desert.

Today, this ancient idea can be combined with modern design to reduce energy bills, cut emissions, and keep cities livable as the climate gets hotter.

Heat kills three times more people in Europe than car crashes.

And Europe just had its hottest June ever.

We spent 50 years making cars safe. We never made our cities safe.

Seatbelts. Airbags. Speed limits. We keep people safe on the road.

But our cities soak up the sun all day and hold the heat all night.

So we turn on the AC. But AC doesn't cool a city. It just moves the heat around.

It pulls heat out of one room and throws it into the street.

Now think of millions of machines doing that at once. The more we cool inside, the hotter it gets outside.

There's a better way.

Green walls and green roofs cool the building and the street.

▪️ Plants give shade, so the heat never lands
▪️ The leaves give off water. That cools the air, like sweat cools your skin
▪️ A roof full of plants stays much cooler than a bare roof

Put them all over a city, and the whole area gets cooler.

Putting nature into a building was never the hard part.

Financing it at scale is.

For 15 years, Biotonomy has designed buildings that cool themselves, capture and reuse their own water, and bring living ecosystems into the middle of concrete cities.

The technology works. We've built it.

The bottleneck is money.

Capital still flows to grey infrastructure — pipes, pumps, concrete — because that's what the market knows how to price. Nature gets treated as decoration, not infrastructure. So it stays small.

Next week, our CEO and Founder Moein Nodehi is taking that conversation to London.

On Wednesday he joins the panel at "Changing Mindsets: Mobilising More Private Investment for Nature in Europe", part of London Climate Action Week — on one question:

How do we move from financing a good idea to financing it at the scale cities actually need?

He'll answer it through the industry that builds most of our cities: real estate.

Right after, Moein Nodehi will pitch Biotonomys' new spinoff to a room of impact investors.

What 15 years of building this has taught us:

◾ Nature pays back on the operating bill — lower energy and water costs, every month.
◾ It's an asset real estate can charge a premium for, not a cost center.
◾ Regulation is moving it from "nice to have" to required.

If you don't understand natural cooling, you don't understand architecture.

Most buildings are built the wrong way.
First we build the shape.
Then we add AC to fix it.

A glass box in the sun gets hot.
Like a greenhouse.
So we fight the heat with power.
All day. Every day.

The power bill never stops.
And if the power goes out, the building gets too hot to use.

There is a better way.
A building can cool itself.
No AC. Just air, water, plants, and the sun.

Here is how it works:

- Windcatcher: a tower on top. It catches the wind and sends cool air down.
- Solar chimney: the sun heats it. It pulls hot air up and out.
- Earth tubes: air comes in through the cool ground first. So it starts cool.
- Cool water channel: the air passes over water. Now it's even cooler.
- Green roof and green walls: plants shade the building and cool the air.

Cool air comes in at the bottom.
Hot air goes out the top.
No machine in the middle.

This is not new.
People in old Persia did this 700 years ago.
They made desert homes much cooler. With no power at all.

What is new? Smart sensors and AI.
They watch the wind and the heat.
They open and close each part on their own.

Old ideas. New tools.

A building that needs power to stay cool is not really designed.
It's just plugged in.

Not drain the planet and our wallets.

An entire US state — bigger than the UK — just ran out of water.

And the reason is not lack of rain or snow.

Colorado just lived through the hottest year in its history.

All 64 counties are in a state of emergency.

The problem is how the water is stored.

In the mountains, the snow IS the state's actual water tank.

The snow is supposed to melt slowly through spring and summer — feeding the rivers right when people need it.

This year it got so hot the snow melted a month too early. And super fast.

The dry ground drank up most of it, and the heat took even more.

Only a fifth of the normal water actually reached the rivers.

The real problem is that Colorado relies on a single giant water system.

When that one source fails, everyone fails with it.

For the past 15 years, we at Biotonomy have been building the opposite.

Not one giant centralized system but thousands of small decentralized ones.

Every building catches and stores its own water, right where it falls.

If one runs low, the rest keep going.

Nothing can break it all at once.

And it keeps working even when the big system runs dry.

This is what we call Nature Based Architecture.

In just 8 years, Beijing restored almost 60% of the water it had lost over the past 35 years.

Most people think once the water under a city runs out, it's gone for good.

But that's not the case.

For decades, Beijing took more water from the ground than nature could put back.

Year after year, the groundwater below the city kept dropping.

And the ground itself began to sink.

In 2014, the city decided to turn it around.

There was no single solution but a combination of them working together.

First, they brought in water from far away — a giant channel that carries it over 1,000 kilometers from the south of the country.

They took less from the ground, closing old wells and pumping far less from below.

And they began treating wastewater and sending it back to rivers and gardens instead of throwing it away.

But here's the smartest part.

They started intentionally putting water back into the ground — guiding rain into pits, letting it soak in and fill the empty space below.

And it worked.

Rivers that had dried up started flowing again.

The ground that was sinking even began to rise.

Here is the thing most people don't get.

A city doesn't run out of water because nature failed.

It runs out because of bad design.

Cities don't have water problems — they have design problems.

Beijing is proof that if we take action and design our cities well, we can restore our water cycles.

This is the side of a green wall nobody ever shows you.
And it's the side doing the real work.

What you're looking at is the root system hidden behind the wall.

Most people think a green wall is decoration.
It's not.

Here's what's actually happening.

The leaves on the front shade the wall from direct sun.
The plants release water through their leaves, and that evaporation cools the air around the building — the same way sweat cools your skin.
And the thick layer of roots and soil behind them acts like natural insulation, slowing the heat trying to get in.

Shade, evaporation, and insulation.
Three cooling systems stacked into one wall.
Working together, with no energy consumption at all.

So a green wall isn't there to look nice.
It's one of the simplest ways ever invented to keep a building cool.
