Locally sourced Mallorcan boulders with the right earthy feel to them. Not all stone is the same, but I really like these ones. Sculptural in a way.

We spent time on site this week carefully positioning and facing each boulder so they sit naturally within the landscape.

Texture. Tone. Edges.

Early morning planting olive trees into the landscape

Plants for hot climates? Plant combinations from our gardens. Cacti and low-water planting in different settings.

Easy care. Low water. Super cool.

Soft planting and ornamental grasses form a key part of our planting palettes. No garden is ever the same, yet certain plants return again and again.

Layers, repetition and rhythm define the structure.

Shrubs provide definition, while Mediterranean trees create a living roof bringing scale, and shade to the garden.

What thrives on my own roof terrace in Mallorca? For someone with little time this is a safe and cool option.

A plat palette built for sun, wind, and long dry periods. Structural succulents, sculptural forms, and cascading plants. Crassulas, cactus plants, and strong companions shape the space.

I always prefer a bit of height for the planters, around 50–60 cm, so when you sit down, you’re not only looking at the plants, you’re sitting within them. It brings the greenery closer and makes the whole terrace feel more immersive.

Coming home to my own garden after a long day always feels good. A moment to slow down, remove a couple of persistent weeds and take in the space while visualising new ideas for the garden. I guess this garden will evolve over time, and I will keep adding and moving structures around indefinitely.

Time to cut back my Muhly grass

🌾 Muhly grass only needs cutting once a year, ideally from late winter to early spring, depending on your climate. I’m in Palma, a frost-free area, but Mallorca’s humidity adds its own challenges. In very wet seasons it’s better to wait a little longer to avoid root rot.

🌾 Cut back to around 10–20 cm from the base. Remove all old, dead growth and you’ll be left with a neat little “hedgehog” mound ready to regrow. I’d like to think that a slightly taller
”hedgehog” look allows for some more protection for the new growth.

🌾 Planting tips:
• Spacing: 60–80 cm
• Plant in groups for the best visual impact

I planted mine last spring. If you have older, well-established plants, they can easily be divided in spring to rejuvenate them and create a lighter, airier look. Just use a sharp spade straight through the clump.

What I appreciate most about winter in Mallorca is the temperature, the sun and the silence.
Empty beaches, crystal-clear water and the freedom to wander from mountains to sea, depending on the day.

Today 15 degrees, clear water…and a very Scandinavian idea of winter in shorts.

A journey from vision to reality at our project in the field. A Mediterranean planting palette with seasonal depth reshaping an open field into a living beautiful landscaped garden all year round. Here’s a look at the story behind the transformation. 🌿

🌿 Picture 1
The finished result following months of work: a new acess to the field from the house, layered soft planting accompanied by the existing plane trees on the terrace.

🌿 Picture 2
The guiding 3D renders helped the client visualise the atmosphere before the build began.

🌿 Picture 3
The “Before” Scene. An open field with wildflowers, pretty in spring, but less attractive in the the summer. A blank canvas ready for renewal.

🌿 Picture 4
Work in Progress. Contours set, soil prepared and structure emerging as the team brings design into form.

🌿 Picture 5
The Completed Garden. A tapestry of ornamental grasses, salvia, pistachia, gaura, verbena, phlomis, achillea etc. All moving in a soft Mediterranean rhythm.

🌿 Picture 6
Six Months Later (Autumn). Pulled through the harsh summer, now taking a deep breath before going into the next season.
The deciduous tree (shedding leaves in the autumn) Prunus ‘Pissardii’ rising like a silhouette above Muhly grass, pistachia shrubs and gaura.

🌿 Picture 7
Arbutus unedo: A reliable, native multi-stemmed Mediterranean tree. The Strawberry tree capturing the quiet, refined character of the garden up close.
