I read places and spaces differently, I get inspired by the special energy and idiosyncracy of a location, the genius loci (the the spirit or presence of a place, a house or a landplot). This is not something esoteric, it comes from my long experience and deep understanding of places and architecture. although black and white normally wouldn’t be my first choice of color scheme (he/she who knows me, knows that I LOOOVE colors). but the somewhat swift medium of sketches works better in this reduced gradient.
and in a way it is a fine description of the roller coaster of my life that has been somewhat extreme during the last 2 years. lights and shadows describe it the best. but there is always light, it is always about light.

I finished this one just now. in order to keep the highlights bright, some masking is necessary while adding the darker layers of color. it all starts with a rough, but nonetheless precise charcoal sketch on super soft and textured heavy FABRIANO rug. some of the highlights, the ones that look like edged into the paper, come next. yes, they come before the dark...

for me, with my background as an architect, it is all about the light. even the obscure shadow has still some light left.

again a detail from the historic house (1928) in berlin. the round window covers a little cabinet (toilet paper, right there, where supply is needed) 😁. all tiles where custom made near sitges and shipped to berlin.
