A new restaurant is planned for the historic water reservoir located next to Vartiovuori Observatory

The historic water reservoir on Vartiovuori Hill is undergoing a transformation. Completed in 1903 as Turku’s first water tower, the building has served many purposes over the decades, from exhibition space to storage. It is now being renewed by Lundén Architecture as a panoramic restaurant overlooking the city.

The site offers an exceptional opportunity to combine a historic building, distinctive urban landscape, and a contemporary restaurant experience. Situated at the heart of Turku’s historic urban landscape, the project supports the broader goal of opening the Observatory building and the entire Vartiovuori Hill to the public, creating a year-round living room for residents. The restaurant is expected to welcome its first customers in 2027.

The renovation of Vartiovuori Park will begin next year. Respecting the park’s natural and historic character, the project will improve facilities and infrastructure. The panoramic restaurant will complement these improvements, adding a unique attraction to the city.

Revised Espoo House plan moves forward to the City Board

A revised plan for Espoo House and its surroundings has been shared with the City Board. The project will bring Espoo’s management, administrative and support services, currently spread across the city, into a single building in Espoon keskus, reinforcing its role as the city’s administrative centre.

The updated plan preserves the 1979 Council Hall and removes the previously planned multipurpose hall, allowing the City Council to continue meeting in its current space. Although the building has been scaled down to reduce construction costs, the core idea remains: Espoo House will be open to all and serve as an active interface and meeting place for residents and decision‑makers.

Lower floors will include shared spaces, a restaurant, possible commercial premises, a resident service centre and plaza, while the upper floors will house offices for approximately 1450 employees. The timber‑framed building will feature a recycled‑aluminium façade designed for easier maintenance. Surrounding areas between the railway station and Espoo Cathedral will also be renewed with housing for nearly 600 residents and new office spaces.

After approval of the updated needs assessment, a project plan will follow, with construction scheduled to begin in 2029 and finish in 2031. For more information, please visit:
