PAVE Architects Ltd is a design office that hails from the latitudes of four seasons. We create and execute comprehensive aesthetical solutions that aim to make the difference. While our creations have proven to be unique and versatile, three things can be found in every one of them: uncontested quality, meticulous attention to client’s wishes and the fact that even though considering ourselves as experts in our field, we really do not want to take everything so bloody seriously.

At K21, the material palette brings the building’s different layers into focus.

Raw concrete from the former warehouse sits alongside corrugated metal, galvanised steel and vivid orange surfaces.

Creating a clear contrast between the retained industrial structure and the new architecture.

Some of the graffiti on the original concrete has also been preserved.

During the years when the warehouse stood derelict, these markings became a prominent part of its character.

Keeping traces of them allows that chapter of the building’s history to remain visible rather than being erased.

Across the courtyards and facades, metal screens, stairs and vertical fins filter sunlight and cast changing shadows over the surfaces throughout the day.

Together with the weathered concrete and strong colour accents, these details give K21 a material identity that feels both industrial and distinctly new.

K21’s building form is defined by the preserved silhouette of the former sulphur warehouse. The robust concrete base remains visible at street level, while the lighter metal structure above traces the original volume and gives the building its distinctive, almost translucent character.

The rhythm of the vertical slats changes as you move around the building, revealing glimpses of balconies, external staircases and the warm orange surfaces within. Old and new remain clearly readable, with the raw concrete structures grounding the building and the new layers bringing lightness, depth and movement to its long facade.

Together, these elements allow K21 to retain the scale and identity of the industrial warehouse while giving it a new architectural life within Toppilansalmi.

We always love seeing how the homes we design take shape once the residents move in and make them their own.

One of the Meri Villas homes was recently featured in Kaleva, offering a look inside a home shaped around both its seaside setting and the residents’ everyday life. The article explores how the original architectural plans were adapted during the design process, from a dedicated pantry to changes in the sauna spaces, as well as how the residents selected the interior materials and added their own art, ceramics and personal details.

The result is a home that carries the architectural identity of Meri Villas while reflecting the people who live there.

As construction progresses on the Terrace Houses in Vaakunanranta, Oulu and we wanted to take a closer look at the landscape that surrounds the project. Set within the Oulujoki river delta, the area is shaped by water, greenery and views across the surrounding archipelago.

The marina, shoreline vegetation and open stretches of water give the site a character that feels closely connected to nature while still being part of the city. This relationship between the architecture and its waterside setting is an important part of the development of the neighbourhood and how the Terrace Houses are now beginning to take shape there.

A look at Meri-Villas in the summer sun, now fully settled into their waterfront setting in Toppilanranta. The red and black timber façades and repeated gable forms create a distinctive rhythm along the shoreline, giving the 12 homes a strong shared identity while still allowing each villa to have its own character.

One of the defining features of the design is how the homes open towards the sea. The upper floor living spaces connect directly to generous roof terraces and sheltered outdoor areas, creating an extension of the interiors during the warmer months. With uninterrupted views across the seafront, Meri-Villas combine a central location in Oulu with the feeling of living right on the coast, a rare setting for detached homes within the city.

One of the highlights of Oulu’s European Capital of Culture year, Fotografiska Tallinn’s PLAY exhibition has been a main attraction this summer, whether rain or shine.

The exhibition is all about its title, and the spatial design brings that idea into the experience itself. Visitors can peek through openings in the walls, crawl through shortcuts, touch, feel and, most importantly, play.

Lighting was one of the key elements in creating a multisensory atmosphere. As visitors move through the exhibition, the colour and character of each space changes, allowing the photography to stand out to its full effect. Genelec sound systems complete the experience with soundscapes that support the artworks and draw visitors deeper into the world of each photograph.

Together, the layout, lighting and sound turn the exhibition into something that is not only viewed, but explored and experienced.

A year ago, the Housing Fair opened in Oulu and House Hjemma welcomed its first visitors. Designed within just 50+20 m², the home proved that compact living can be both timeless and generous through thoughtful architecture, carefully integrated interiors and a strong connection to nature.

As we look back on an unforgettable summer, we wish everyone exhibiting and visiting this year’s Housing Fair in Lempäälä a fantastic event filled with inspiring architecture.

Sauna Karhi is partially embedded into the riverbank, where the site’s natural topography provides shelter while opening carefully framed views towards the surrounding landscape. Existing log structures and contemporary additions come together through a restrained material palette, creating a calm retreat that strengthens the connection between architecture and nature.

Nearly thirty years after its completion in 1996, Sauna Karhi continues to demonstrate how designing with longevity in mind creates architecture that remains timeless.

The interior of Sauna Käpylä is centred around the landscape beyond its walls. Expansive glazing draws the sea into the living spaces, while light timber surfaces and a calm material palette create a warm and understated atmosphere. Completed in 2017, the project remains a timeless example of architecture that brings together everyday living, the sauna tradition and a strong connection to nature.
