As fiji enters into its coldest time of the year and the dry season, a lot of trees can be seen to having the leaves change colour and in some cases dropping leaves altogether - much to the chagrin of pool owners ( but don’t worry, it’s only for a short period). But why do they do this? Trees shed their leaves primarily to survive the colder, drier weather. By dropping foliage, trees conserve moisture and energy, preventing branches from drying out when water is scarce. A highly organized, step-by-step process drives this leaf drop, As daylight decreases and temperatures drop, trees produce hormones that tell them it is time to prepare for dormancy. Before the leaves drop, the tree breaks down its green chlorophyll and pulls vital nutrients and sugars back into its roots and stems for storage. This process causes leaves to change into brilliant yellow, orange, and red colors. Trees huh, pretty damn clever!! And when the temps creep up again, they put the leaves back out to give us the shade that we crave :)
