HERE ARE THE 5 QUALITIES OF RAW EARTH USED AS A BUILDING MATERIAL 🧱
In reality, environmental concerns are helping rediscover the many qualities of raw earth as a material. Its use doesn't just contribute to resource depletion, increased pollution (water, air, soil), waste, or biological changes.
The use of raw earth as a building material offers the following:
1) Raw earth is an ecological material: This means it's a material that requires little energy and water for its implementation and disposal. Sourced from local, abundant, and inexhaustible resources, it reduces issues related to [transport?]. It's also infinitely reusable.
2) Raw earth materials are economical and local: This means that in most cases, they don't require costly transformation. For a single-family home, the earth from foundations and excavation can sometimes suffice to build the structure.
It is an extension of the soil and, as such, contributes to the landscape and architectural identity of the territory it comes from.
It is implemented using local skills and jobs.
3) Earth material is a "HEALTHY" material: This means it's not harmful during construction or use. It helps make the indoor air healthy by regulating hygrothermal conditions, while absorbing odors and filtering certain pollutants.
4) Earth material is an "ally to comfort": This means it provides the necessary thermal inertia to buildings in our climates, freeing them from external temperature variations, especially in the dry season.
When used in walls and floors, it contributes to sound (or acoustic) insulation.
As a plaster, it adds to acoustic comfort by reducing sound reverberation.
Alone or combined with other materials (glass, wood, concrete, etc.), raw earth offers great architectural freedom by mobilizing various techniques or adapting them. Contemporary architecture uses earth either as a visible exterior structure or protected inside.
5) Earth material is "PLASTIC": Thanks to its plasticity, earth allows for soft, sensitive forms that awaken the senses, as well as interesting decorative effects.
6) The alternation of layers during its implementation (rammed earth, CSEBs) is an opportunity to create plays of colors, textures, shadows, horizontality, etc.
At this stage, earth enables pronounced landscape integration. By its very nature and color, we can speak of "organic architecture."
The building, like a living organism, can blend into the landscape and meet the needs of its users in harmony with its environment.
