When extending a property - particularly for a new kitchen, the existing consumer unit may be too small, or simply too far away to connect the many new circuits and appliances.

In ths instance it was easier and more economical to install a new consumer unit close to the new room and connect to the existing supply with a suitably sized cable.

The Schneider resi9 system makes for a tidy unit and a clean finish with a plain white door.

This recent consumer unit installation was larger than most. The principles are still the same, careful labelling, planning and methodical work ensure a successful job.

The Schneider XE range minimises screw-in connections and unnecessary wires to save space in the board and declutter - even so, with the number of circuits in this particular install, the "GTL" trunking was a must. It provides extra room behind the fuse board to organise and route the wiring.

The Schneider Resi9 doors finish off the unit, giving a nice clean look.

This small fuse board was installed to a kitchen extension. Although certainly up to standard for the time it was installed, and a tidy job underneath the cover, it was lacking some important safety features that the current normes require.

A new RCD, appropriately calibrated circuit breakers and a "heures pleines/heures creuses" relay to take advantage of the cheaper off-peak electricity rate.

Whilst never the most stylish addition to a rooms decor, the Schneider Reis9 range for domestic installations at least looks modern and clean.

This little fuse board had served it's purpose over the years, but it was time for it to be updated and improved, replacing the old cartridge fuses with modern circuit breakers and, most importantly, the addition of a RCD, to bring it up to modern standards and safety requirements.

The incoming power cable was also replaced for a larger cross section, ensuring that there's no danger of any overheating when the property is using lots of power.

Does your tableau électrique look like this? Even worse with the cover off?

A mixture of old and very old, some circuit breakers, some cylindrical fuses, various unused modules left over from when the property was supplied with 3 phase, and - most importantly - no RCD.

Well overdue a major overhaul, with all new circuit breakers, interrupters différentiels, and a proper earth connection, this electrical installation is now safe, and ready for future expansion.

Final testing and labelling still to be finished off.

Many french properties, especially rural ones, have outbuildings, barns and sheds, often these were supplied with electricity for a few lights and a socket or 2.

Over time the cables and fittings can break, corrode or are simply cut off from the main supply.

To make full use of your outbuildings, as workshops, garages, craft spaces or even to transform them into extra accommodation, the best solution is to install a small secondary fuseboard, supplied from the main board with an appropriately sized cable.

This serves as a starting point for any future expansion, without having to further disturb your homes electrical installation.

Wether adding a few extra sockets to a bedroom or installing a new wall mounted radiator, the most difficult choice is often how to run the wiring.

Hiding new cables behind a stud wall gives an invisible installation, but can often involve lots of extra work and decorating.

Chasing out solid walls isn't always possible, and can generate lots of dust and noise.

Visible cables can be an option for garages or workshops, but in the home aren't always visually pleasing.

Plastic trunking either just above the skirting board, or along the top corners of a room can strike a nice balance between disruptive work and discreet wiring. This range from Italian manufacturer Iboco offers a full range of applications (plug sockets, light switches, RJ45 sockets...) with a modern design and full list of accessories for a nice finish.

Does your property have a 3-phase electrical supply?

As well as lacking the necessary interrupteur différentiel to ensure the occupants safety, this outdated consumer unit only made use of 1 of the 3 incoming phases. The owner had subscribed to a 12kva supply, but only using 1 of the 3 phases meant that their usage was limited to 4kva, much lower than required, and often found their supply tripping off due to an overload.

This new board, with a 4-pole différentiel, cleverly distributes each phase to a separate area of the property, including other sub-boards, to ensure that no single phase will be overloaded, ensuring continuity of electrical supply.
