How long does it actually take to build an eco chalet? ⏱️

The honest answer: from breaking ground, a fully managed project is usually around a year to completion.

The SIP structure itself goes up in under two weeks. Within roughly a month the building is watertight -windows, doors, roof and cladding all on. Then internal works carry on through winter, because a SIP structure is so well insulated that the cold months aren't dead time on site.

Worth remembering that year starts at groundworks. Land, design, engineering and planning all happen before it, each with their own timeline.

This is the part of SIP construction that people don’t quite believe until they see it.

The panels arrive pre-cut and numbered, engineered to your exact design. The structure - walls and roof - goes up in under two weeks.

Compare that to blockwork or traditional timber frame, where you’re weeks or months into the build before you’re anywhere near watertight.

Faster shell means less time exposed to weather, less time paying for scaffolding, and follow-on trades getting started sooner. On an Alpine site where the season is short, that’s not a nice-to-have. It changes what’s possible.

Comparez ça à la maçonnerie ou à l’ossature bois traditionnelle, où vous êtes à des semaines, voire des mois, avant d’approcher le hors d’eau.

Une structure plus rapide, c’est moins d’exposition aux intempéries, moins de temps à payer l’échafaudage, et des corps de métier suivants qui démarrent plus tôt. Sur un chantier alpin où la saison est courte, ce n’est pas un simple confort. Ça change ce qui est possible.

Demand is high. Supply is low. And a lot of land changes hands before it’s ever advertised.

If you’re searching property portals from another country and wondering why nothing good comes up - that’s why. By the time a plot is public, it’s often already been offered around locally.

We help clients with this. Through our contacts with local estate agents we can:

→ Source potential plots, including ones not yet on the market
→ Visit them and send you pictures and information
→ Advise on whether the plot actually suits what you want to build
→ Give you a realistic construction budget for that specific site
→ Liaise with the agent on your behalf

That last two matter more than people expect. A plot can look perfect and still be an expensive mistake — access, ground conditions, height limits and local planning rules all decide what you can actually put on it.

Better to know before you buy than after.

Sometimes you have to knock it down before you can build it back up.

Not every project starts with a clean plot. Some start with something that has to come down first and there's a strange satisfaction in that moment. It's the point where the old makes way for the new, and the whole thing finally feels real.

From here: groundworks, foundations, then the SIP structure going up.

Parfois, il faut démolir avant de pouvoir reconstruire.

Tous les projets ne partent pas d'un terrain vierge. Certains commencent par quelque chose qu'il faut d'abord faire tomber et il y a une étrange satisfaction dans ce moment. C'est l'instant où l'ancien laisse place au nouveau, et où tout devient enfin réel.

À partir d'ici : terrassement, fondations, puis la structure SIP qui monte.

Everyone builds for winter in the mountains. Almost nobody builds for Summer.
Then you get a summer like this one and suddenly the house is 28 degrees at bedtime and there’s nothing you can do about it.

Overheating isn’t bad luck. It’s four decisions made at design stage:

→ Where the glazing goes and how big it is. South and west glass gains the most heat. Beautiful in February, brutal in July.

→ Whether there’s shading. Roof overhangs and external shutters stop heat before it reaches the glass.

→ How much the building can absorb. Heavy floors and dense materials soak up heat during the day and release it slowly at night.

→ Whether you can flush the heat out. Ventilation that runs at night, or windows placed so air actually moves through rather than sitting still.

RE2020 measures summer overheating specifically - it’s not an afterthought in the regulations, and it shouldn’t be one in your design.

If you’re planning a build, don’t be afraid to ask what happens in a heatwave. The answer tells you a lot.

Take it from us - we supply panels that beat it as standard.

Here's what catches self-builders out. RE2020 is France's environmental building regulation, and every new build has to prove a carbon impact assessment, a full lifecycle analysis, and an AA energy and emissions rating.

Traditional timber frame and concrete struggle to hit that without expensive retrofitting, extra insulation, spec changes mid-build, budget gone.

SIP panels don't have that problem. Airtight by design, net negative carbon footprint, AA ratings as standard. They were built for exactly this, before RE2020 even existed.

What if your home barely needed heating at all? 🔥❌

You'll see the phrase "almost passive" all over eco building and almost nobody explains what it actually means. So here it is, plainly.

An almost-passive home is one so well built it barely needs active heating. The building itself does the work a boiler normally has to.

It comes down to three things:

→ Keep the heat in - an airtight, fully insulated SIP structure with no gaps or cold spots
→ Don't waste fresh air - ventilation that brings in fresh air while keeping the warmth from the air going out
→ Use free energy - solar, heat pumps, triple glazing, a Canadian well and smart shading doing the heavy lifting

The result is a home with stable temperatures, a constant supply of fresh air, and heating bills that barely move, even in an Alpine winter.

That's what an AA energy rating actually feels like to live in.
