From design idea to finished transformation ✨

For this recent pool renovation, we combined a dark grey base with blue walls, which is certainly the first time we have achieved a two tone colour scheme and quite possibly the first time it has ever been done with a fibreglass lining. The use of Rock Art and blue tile luxury mosaic along with the Marble Compass motif has helped achieve a truly unique result. The anthracite skimmers and fittings compliment the design and improve the long term appearance too.

We love how the sun, water and time of day transforms the appearance and colour of the pool and the effect of the LED lighting at night is breathtaking.

A detail that can make a big difference in a pool renovation is the mosaic border.

As well as adding character and helping define the waterline, a well-chosen mosaic can complement the water colour beautifully and really finish the look of a pool. We advise our clients to spend some time choosing their mosaics because it’s one of those details that pulls a renovation together.

They can also have a practical benefit. A mosaic border at the waterline can help with the scum line that often develops over time, making marks less noticeable and the waterline easier to keep looking clean.

What we also like about mosaics is how versatile they are — they’re not just for borders. We’re currently using mosaic as part of a step area design on a project (not finished yet), and it’s a great example of how they can be used to add interest and define features within the pool itself.

For some pool owners, mosaic becomes both a design feature and a practical solution.

What a difference a renovation can make ✨

Older pool often become stained and difficult to maintain over time.

A fibreglass lining creates a smooth, durable finish that completely transforms the look and feel of the pool.

Loving how creative you can be with colours and designs. Can’t wait to see how this looks when it is finished.

One of the most satisfying parts of what we do is seeing the transformation from before to after on older swimming pools.

Many pools we renovate have become damaged, leaking, tiles becoming loose and very hard to keep clean after years of use. In these cases we install a new bespoke made fibreglass lining, which completely transforms the pool.

Most of our customers take the opportunity to change the fittings, replace the skimmers, some maybe modify the steps and replace the margelles.. all of which we can undertake as part of the project.

We believe Fibreglass is a great long-term solution as the surface is smooth, non-porous and very durable. It’s much easier to maintain, helps reduce staining and algae as it can’t attach to the interior of the pool, is completely leak proof and reduces the amount of chemicals required.. so it not only looks great but saves you money and is a fabulous investment in your pool.

Here’s a recent before and after renovation — it’s always great seeing an older pool brought back to life

Renovating tiled pools

I often get asked if it is really necessary to remove existing mosaic tiles before installing a new fibreglass lining. The answer is always yes.

The most common cause of failing mosaic tiles is 'ground heave'. This is where the ground surrounding the pool basin, normally heavy clay soil, expands and contracts according to moisture content causing the pool basin to move and flex. With mosaic tiles this causes the grouting to fail and crumble and casues the tiles to pop off. With large format tiles they will likely crack through which can often be more difficult to spot. These situations will cause the pool to leak, often from multiple points making detection extremely difficult.

It is not uncommon for pool basins to crack owing to ground heave and excessive water build up. These cracks are difficult to see unless the pool is stripped back to the shell. Without correct repair they will get worse and can lead to complete and catastrophic failure of the entire structure.

Ground heave causes significant issues with all rendered or tiled surfaces as they are not flexible and cannot cope with movement of the pool basin. PVC/vinyl and fibreglass can flex with the pool without cracking. However, only a fibreglass lining, which is completely bonded to the pool shell will help improve the structural performance of the pool.

When considering a renovation it will be a significant financial investment so it is better to get it right than experience problems soon after investing money in a new lining.

Not removing the tiles is a cheaper option and some artisans will offer this in a bid to win a contract by being the 'cheapest'. But this is a great example of cheap doesn't always mean good value.

I attach captioned images of a recent renovation I completed which was a classic case as set out above. Most of the significant structural issues were not visible from the original tiled surface. The extent of the structural issues if left would have undoubtedly resulted in the pool shell becoming damaged beyond repair within 5 - 10 years.

The client was delighted with the end result and chose a highly decorated finish with 2 x large dolphins swimming playfully around the anthracite drain cover, a large marble compass framed in classical dark blue tile and a Roman Key mosaic to the waterline. All complimented by the new anthracite skimmers, lights and returns and finished in RAL 5132 Sky Blue Swimcoat.
