Over the years I’ve spent a lot of time thinking about what my ideal house would look like if I could build it from scratch. These thoughts, were always within the context of where I was living at the time or where I would want to live. A house in London, or in the English countryside or on a beach on the garden route are all very different houses.
Practical considerations like the climate, the type of land and surrounding environment all come into play. Although obviously I’ve consistently ignored the most practical consideration of all i.e. what I could realistically afford to build.
But one of the other considerations is how much inspiration you take (or don’t) from the local architectural style and how you apply it. As I’ve become more familiar with the architecture of south west France, I’ve started to play around with designs that take on some of the key architectural cues of the area. Not just houses but agricultural and industrial buildings too.
Which led me to an idea to take a layout for a small house that I had previously developed and adapt it to the form of an old agricultural hanger with an asymmetrical roof. In this rough example, to preserve the agricultural look and manage light and heat, I positioned the tall side to the south with minimal glazing while the north side is fully glazed. I think it’s an idea that I’ll continue to develop.

At the end of any project which requires planning authorisation (a déclaration préalable or permis de construire), when you think that everything is finally finished, there are still two more actions to complete:
- submit a declaration of completion and conformity of work * (DAACT - Déclaration attestant l'achèvement et la conformité des travaux) to the planning office
- declare the work done to tax authorities (within your Biens immobiliers section on imports) and pay the development tax

All the information you need for both you can find in your planning authorisation documents.

�* Note, for certain projects, you might need to provide certificates showing compliance with certain construction regulations (e.g. accessibility, acoustic, environmental and thermal regulations, etc). In those cases an independent technical inspector or an engineer will need to be consulted.

We finally finished our little side project and have installed our test window. We managed to add double glazing while maintaining exactly the same dimensions and proportions. Upgraded with a crémone, rather than the simple wooden bar closer and hinged trickle vents.

Don’t forget a Déclaration Préalable maybe required for anything that changes the external appearance of your house.
