LES GRANDES MANŒUVRES – FROM SPECIALIZED ENCLOSURE TO PUBLIC SPACE
The project begins instantaneously with the creation of a worksite huts area providing the whole urban development zone and financing the transformation of the fire station. The Grandes Manœuvres association coordinates all stakeholders (public, private, inhabitants) and leads every step of the process, from funding to implementation.
The project spreads out from the courtyard. In the pioneer phase, public space appropriation through field-based produced urban furnitures reveals the site potential and its community vocation.
According to an incremental strategy, buildings are gradually colonised and refurbished at a minimum level with an economical view, and so that they respect the monument authenticity. The new functions slip into the existing buildings, taking advantage of their architectural qualities, and bring to life the site in resonance with the spirit of the place.
The participatory dynamic strengthens the site attractiveness and reinstalls the fire station in its quarter even before the firemen departure, which enables the installation of the activities making the site radiating in the city.

As the firemen keep working, the mobile tower takes the rooftop by storm and opens a new view over the city.
