End of a wonderful era!!
At the grand old age of 73 I have decided to take semi retirement and cease to carry out full written structural surveys. I have seen so many wonderful houses and chateaux in the past 16 years and have thoroughly enjoyed the work.
I will however, continue to act as a consultant 'expert au batiment' advising on such problems as cracked walls; timber infestation and rot; subsidence etc etc.
I can still do pre-purchase house surveys but only on a verbal basis, that is without the full written survey report as done previously. I telephone the client after my inspection and can follow up with emailed bullet point notes as an aide-memoire.
Thank you to everyone who has supported me in the past, I hope that my work has given all my clients 'peace of mind'.

Tomorrow we will be released again to carry out surveys and to advise on structural questions. We have already had an enquiry from a UK client to go and look at 5 properties that he has on his 'wish list' so that he can get ahead of the game for when he can come over and thus not waste time looking at properties that don't suit him, so 5 mini surveys in a day - no problem for us!

Many times in my survey report I tell people to avoid a build-up of moss on their roof as it can grow under the slates and transmit damp to the inside of the roof potentially damaging the timbers. Here are a couple of roofs in Cornwall which need to be cleaned off.

Here we go again, electrics nightmare. Nice new consumer unit with a few wires but "not quite finished" as the old fuse boards and exposed cables are still hanging in the corner of the kitchen - is this a fire risk or what?

When carrying out a survey, I frequently see exit holes made by wood boring beetles, particularly Death Watch Beetle in Northern France. Usually It is not possible to confirm if any treatment work has been done, but occasionally I see professional treatment evidence of the timber having been injected. The little plastic plugs in the photo show that this old beam has been treated so hopefully the beetle infestation is halted.

Well most of you have laughed at my header photo of the toilet on casters which we experienced a few years ago in the Ardennes. But last week we had a new experience - a swiveling Bidet - not for the faint hearted but it does save space!!!! Puts a whole new meaning when you say to your wife - 'swivel'!!!

Arrrrg! again!!
To my dismay I see that we now have a spin-off program to 'Escape to the Chateau' called 'Escape to the Chateau - DIY' where the whiskered one is now advising others on how to do up old Chateaux - really?!!! So yesterday we have a young couple making a totally illegal trailer out of an old caravan chassis - trailers in France of that size have to have their own Carte Gris and are treated as a separate vehicle to the car therefore needing separate insurance. Then we have the disillusioned couple who have made an offer on a run-down chateau which is over £100K over their budget which has an active Termite infestation - hello money pit!!! The producers of the show should put a Health warning at the end of each program saying this is complete fiction and no responsibility will be taken for idiots who copy what has been shown!!!!
