Support : Day 18 of 🧵🪡

With my love of 3D fabrics comes the idea of support. How big a sample can be, until the fabric collapse on itself due to its own weight ?

When using a drapy, thin, fluid fabric, you need a lot of manipulations to make it compact enough to make it stand up, use 3D space on its own.

But what I love and want to explore in my next adventure is this amazing silk triple organza that is very light as well as self supporting, holding volume very well.

Here, I’ve created a square module and repeted it many times, then assembled it with pins.

I wanna see how large it can get, how many module I can add up, before falling.

And very often with self supported fabrics, it will create a shape of its own, rolling and twisting freely.

As always, the fabric is dancing and I’m just following its rythm 💃

Stories ~ Day 15 of

For me, making fabric manipulation is a way to highlight the fabric’s story.

Fabrics have been made for ever, and was always considered a precious object.

Only recently, with mass production and the need for cheap fabrics, the quality really went down and diversity as well. Most fabrics used for garments are either cotton or polyester based.

I would love, through my work, to help remind people how fabric is such a wonderful ressource, complex, rich of textures, techniques, volumes, drapes …

And I try to do that through fabric manipulations, making something original that will caught people’s eyes and make them consider fabric a little bit mode.

It’s the most common thing, everyone have fabric on ther back, but so few seem to be aware of this (now common) treasure.

Day 8 of : 3D !

As per my last posts, I’m sure you’ve understood how much I love to work with 3D techniques, to create new and interesting effects with textiles.

So for this prompt on 3D, I thought I’d show you the moment it became clear to me that 3D would always be a part of my practice.

It was for my graduation collection from fashion school, back in 2017.
I made 4 textile samples and applied them to a womenswear collection.

One of them got all the hype and inspired everything else after ; I’m pretty sure you’ll recognize it.

If you want to see more, here’s the archive of my collection :

It’s when working on this project that I realized my differenciation would be from 3D textiles, and focused since on creating fabric manipulations with volume, referably both front & back.

Day 7 of : Pattern

I love patterns but as always, not in the traditional, flat and printed version that most people outside the fashion/textile industry might think of !

Patterns, in my work, always come from volume and 3D aspects, repeated across a surface.

And to describe my favorite pattern, I love to use this term : Soft Geometry ✨

I realized that I love repetitive geometric patterns, as long as they have a softness to them, usually meaning round or organic shapes.

So here’s a few of the types of Soft Geometric patterns I love, from my latest series « Modulations » .studio.

And if you continue to slide, you’ll discover a few pictures of patterns from architecture that already inspired lots of fabric manipulations 💛

Day 5 of : Surface

For me, interesting fabrics are the one with Volume. Depth. Texture.

When I’m presenting myself, I’m saying I am a textile designer.

Most of the time, this term relates to people making prints and repetiting patterns.

But it’s not at all what I do !

I’m very bad at drawing, and not so good with colors. So prints aren’t for me at all !

But I love to create 3D surfaces : rythms, lines, structures, volumes that makes you forget that textiles start flat ✨

So here’s a few of my favorite manipulations techniques and experiments, from my Fabric Manipulation Book (that is stiiiiill not published yet 😅

1-9, Which one’s your favorite ? 💖

Day 4 of is about Challenges
(So I’m late already to this, let’s see if I can make it through the end of the month 😂)

I am trained as a designer in fashion and textiles, and therefore, everything I make is supposed to have « a purpose » ; I’m supposed to be drawing a garment that someone can wear, or a bag that someone will want to buy for a specific occasion, that will be durable for multiple uses, be practical and resistant.

And also, I want to explore something else.

I want to make sculptures.

I dabbled in with some fabric wall hanging, draping fabric over a frame.

But i’m not happy with the results just yet.

It feels too safe.

So I’ve tried to create something for art and craft contests.

But I’m not calling my project « art pieces » or « textile art » quite yet.

I have some more explorations to make, and I’m not exactly ready to call myself a « textile artist » now.

But I’ve been immersing myself with the advice of many artists on the internet (especially ) that show me I just need to regularly have fun with my medium, and see what comes up !

So in the next few months, I think I’ll be trying more and more small experiments with volume, texture & compositions, and see where it goes …

Follow to see where this journey goes ✨

Day 2 of the is about your current projet !

So here’s a preview of some samples I really like, that I made a few weeks ago and plan on growing and improving next week ❤️

What could it become ? 🤷🏼‍♀️

Hi 👋 it’s been a long time !

Today I just saw that it’s the first day of ´s and I thought I’d give it a try !

Each day is a reason to share a different thing that we love about textile, using the prompts on second slide.

I’m not sure I’ll do them all, but let’s start with day one !

1- Introduction

My name is Floriane Schmitt and I am a creative/designer/craftswoman in love with textiles and especially fabric manipulations.

I’ve been writing a book about all the techniques, sharing them on this account, but it’s not out yet !

I am a trained fashion designer from France and I discovered during my studies my love for textile experimentations, and realized I loved it mode than garment design !

So right after school I launched my own Creative Textile Studio .studio ✨, where I created and handmake textile art, decor and accessories using many textile techniques !

I also love teaching and giving workshops on anything related to fashion & fabrics ❤️

And that’s it for today !

I’ve been sharing techniques from my book for several months now, and it’s fun to look at older posts ; I realize I’ve forgotten a lot of the posts I made, and it’s cool to look back !

It’s also weird that I have been sharing this project for so long, and working on it for even longer, and it’s still not out yet 🤯

In this post, it’s a variation from a well known technique explored in part 1 > Pleating : Tucks !

This technique is about making pleats and stitching them in place. But this time, I wanted to see what it would look like to stuff the pleats with different materials !

If you’re new here, hi ! I’m Floriane and I wrote a book on fabric manipulations that will be published in Q1 of 2024.

While we wait for it to be available, I’m sharing here some techniques that you’ll find inside !

I hope these posts are inspiring you to create your own fabric manipulations, and if you do so, share them using 😍

Let’s try yet another variation : Corded Trapunto, but with only one layer of fabric !

Which means this time the yarn is visible, and we’re playing with zigzag stitches to attach it to the fabric.

This technique allows the use of transparent fabrics, and also more fun using textured and colorful yarns !

Pictures are a few examples of what you can do with this technique, but of course, it’s now your turn to try your own style 🥳

After a few weeks without posting [ive been working on my brand, .studio, and had Covid 😅], I’m happy to come back with a loooot of textures from the next technique I want to present : Trapunto !

Have you ever heard of it ? Let me know in the comments 💛

Ps : I took some of these pictures with a macro lens clipped on my phone, such a fun gadget 🙊

MODULES ❤️

One of my favorite technique for my upcoming (ok it’ll be there in one year only but still) book about fabric manipulations !

The idea here is to multiply one shape several times so it can become a whole surface ⚪️⚪️⚪️

There are many ways to put the repeated shapes together, but this technique always allow some kind of magic : a simple shape doesn’t seem so simple once multiplied !

And also, sometimes the basic shape is hard to recognize ; and the result looks much more complicated !
[Which make you look like a wizard if you do these samples 🙊🧙🏼‍♂️🪄]

Try to make it yourself and show me the result using 😍
