At Archilink, our London surveying team is now operating every week, with the capacity to survey up to three projects per day.

The video below demonstrates how we utilise drone-captured data to create highly accurate 3D models that closely follow the captured point cloud. From these models, we can efficiently extract precise 2D drawings, elevations, roof plans, and other survey information required for design and construction projects.

In London, drone surveying has become an essential part of our workflow. With so many properties having converted roof spaces, dormers, extensions, and complex roof geometries, capturing accurate information from ground level alone is often impossible. Drone data allows us to safely and efficiently record these inaccessible areas while significantly improving accuracy.

We recently completed a pointcloud survey of the iconic Camera Obscura building on Edinburgh’s Royal Mile on behalf of CLWG Architects. Using aerial data capture and advanced reality capture workflows, we produced an accurate digital model and measured drawings of one of the city’s most complex historic buildings. With centuries of irregular alterations and challenging geometry, the structure would have been incredibly difficult to survey using traditional methods alone. At Archilink, we are always looking for ways to improve the accuracy and detail of our surveys. One of the key methods we now use on more than half of our projects is photogrammetry, a process that uses thousands of images to create highly detailed 3D models.

While ground-based LiDAR scanning is incredibly accurate, there are always small areas that can’t be fully captured from ground level. This is where photogrammetry plays a vital role. By capturing thousands of overlapping images, we can fill in the gaps and create a more complete and detailed representation of the building.

Our teams are currently producing around four photogrammetry models every day, and this number continues to grow as demand increases. This technique has become particularly useful for capturing roof information, which is often difficult or impossible to see clearly from the ground.

We are also seeing a rise in demand for orthomosaic elevations. These image-based outputs can offer a much higher level of visual detail than simplified AutoCAD drawings or even some 3D models, making them especially valuable for heritage sites or condition surveys.

By combining LiDAR and photogrammetry, we deliver more complete, accurate and useful survey data for every project.

Our team has recently been on site at Barony Castle Hotel, working on behalf of an architect in Edinburgh to deliver a comprehensive measured survey and digital model of this unique hotel.

A week ahead of the main survey, we carried out an initial visit to establish survey control and capture aerial data. This included the incredible drone flight featured in this image.

The following week, three members of the team returned to undertake the full internal survey. Every space was carefully recorded, from main function areas down to cupboards and kitchens, ensuring no detail was overlooked.

Working within a live hotel environment added an extra layer of complexity, as the team coordinated closely with staff and guests to minimise disruption while maintaining efficiency.

The data collected is now being used to develop an accurate digital model, providing the design team with a reliable foundation for future planning and development. A fantastic effort by the team on a challenging and rewarding project.

What to Expect When Archilink Comes to LiDAR Scan Your Client’s Home

At Archilink, we carry out LiDAR scans of more than 8 buildings every day from our Aberdeen, Glasgow and London bases. We regularly support architects and design teams by capturing accurate building data quickly and efficiently.

If you have a survey booked with us, here’s a simple guide you can share with your clients so they know exactly what to expect on the day.

1. Our team arrives at the property
Survey appointments are typically scheduled for either 10am or 2pm. One or two surveyors will attend. It’s helpful if your client can provide a quick walkthrough on arrival to highlight the layout and access points.
If you provide us with your client’s contact details in advance, we can also get in touch directly on the day if we are running slightly early or late.

2. We unload and set up the equipment
Our team will bring in specialist LiDAR scanning equipment to capture highly accurate measurements and spatial data of the property.

3. We scan every room inside the house
To work efficiently, it’s ideal if your client prepares the property in advance:

Internal doors propped open

Cupboard doors opened

Curtains drawn open

This helps minimise time on site.
The scanner is typically positioned in doorways and central points within each room to ensure full coverage.

4. We scan the exterior
Once internal scanning is complete, we move outside. The scanner is positioned at regular intervals (around every 5 metres) as we move around the building to capture elevations and surroundings.

A clear, unobstructed path around the property makes a big difference to speed and safety.

5. Drone capture (if required)
Where areas such as roofs can’t be fully captured from ground level, we may use a drone to complete the dataset.

By passing this information on ahead of time, you can help ensure your clients are fully prepared — allowing surveys to run smoothly, efficiently, and with minimal disruption.

Our team recently carried out a laser scan survey of a property in Surrey capturing accurate point cloud data to produce drawings tailored to the architect’s requirements.

The final deliverables included 2D AutoCAD drawings and a Revit model, providing a reliable base for the next stage of design. Great work by the team in delivering a precise and efficient survey package. 👏
