‘This is how we’ve always done it’. We hear this a lot, usually from someone experienced, capable and respected by the team. But sometimes, ‘we’ve always done it this way’ can become one of the biggest barriers to improving safety.

Shortcuts become normal over time. PPE gets skipped for quick tasks. Near misses stop being reported because nothing serious happened.

The challenge is having those conversations without making people feel criticised or undermined. Good health and safety culture isn’t about catching people out. It’s about creating an environment where everyone is open to learning, no matter how long they’ve been doing the job.

A lot more workplaces are starting to talk openly about menopause, which is a positive step, but many employees still feel uncomfortable raising it.

For some people, symptoms can affect sleep, concentration, confidence and overall wellbeing in a very real way.

Often, managers worry about saying the wrong thing, so conversations don’t happen at all.

Support doesn’t need to mean having every answer. Usually, it starts with creating an environment where employees feel listened to and able to speak honestly without embarrassment.

Lone working is one of those risks that often gets overlooked because, most of the time, nothing goes wrong.

But when something does happen, whether that’s an accident, medical emergency or threatening situation, people are dealing with it completely alone.

We work with many businesses where employees regularly work independently, from engineers and facilities teams to care workers and drivers.

Having the right procedures in place matters, but so does making sure people genuinely feel supported, connected and able to ask for help when they need it.

Near misses are often the biggest warning signs we never intended to receive.

Because no one was hurt, it's easy to move on and carry on with the day. But every near miss is an opportunity to identify hazards, strengthen procedures and prevent a more serious incident from happening in the future.

Encouraging employees to report near misses without fear of blame helps build a stronger safety culture, where learning comes before reacting.

The question isn't "Did anyone get hurt?"

It's "What can we learn before someone does?"

☀️ July is UV Safety Month, but it's not just sunshine employers should be thinking about.

As temperatures rise, so do the risks for those working outdoors or in hot environments. Whether it's construction, utilities, landscaping, or any other role spent outside, protecting workers from heat and UV exposure should be part of your workplace risk assessment.

Here are a few simple ways to help keep your team safe this summer:

💧 Encourage regular hydration and ensure drinking water is readily available.
🧢 Promote suitable clothing, hats and sunscreen to help protect against harmful UV rays.
🌳 Provide access to shade where possible and schedule regular breaks away from direct sunlight.
⏰ Consider adjusting working hours to avoid the hottest part of the day where practical.
🌡️ Make sure employees know the signs of heat stress and heat exhaustion, and what to do if someone becomes unwell.

A safe workplace isn't just about preventing accidents, it's about protecting your people in every season.

Need support reviewing your workplace health and safety procedures? Get in touch with the team at 01224 826 777 or email [email protected].
