Another successful project completed: the re-roofing, and the repair of the corner turret at the Backpackers Hotel.
This was a particularly challenging restoration project. The turret had been in a state of disrepair for many years, with significant cracking to the stonework at second-floor level and the turret head visibly leaning towards the main roof.
Previous repair attempts by former owners had provided only temporary solutions and it quickly became clear that a comprehensive, long-term approach was needed.
Working alongside , the project involved extensive investigation and problem-solving as the structure was opened up, revealing the true extent of the concealed deterioration. Through careful structural repairs and strengthening works, the team was able to significantly improve the alignment of the turret while preserving as much of the original fabric as possible.
The roof has been re-slated in traditional diminishing courses to maintain the building's historic character.
The original cast iron rainwater goods had reached the end of their service life, with some sections having been replaced with PVC over the years. These have now been fully reinstated with new cast iron gutters and hoppers, including bespoke radial cast iron gutters to the turret, matching the original detailing.
To complete the restoration, the decorative fascias and bargeboards were carefully sanded, repaired where necessary, primed, and redecorated, returning this prominent feature of the building to its former appearance.
