Warm weather + April showers = WEEDS!🌱

Weeds often show up for a reason – they can be indicators of compacted soil, poor drainage, or imbalances in nutrients. And while they might not always be welcome, some do bring benefits: attracting pollinators, protecting bare soil from erosion, and even helping to improve soil structure over time.

That said, not everyone wants to share space with dandelions or bindweed, and it can be tempting to reach for a quick fix – whether that’s a chemical weedkiller or a homemade remedy from the kitchen. But it’s widely accepted that using these – especially around children, pets, and wildlife – isn’t the safest or most sensible option.

Even natural mixes like salt and vinegar can harm more than just weeds. If it kills plants, it also harms the living things that keep soil healthy – like worms, fungi, and microbes. So while it might seem like a gentler solution, it can do more long-term damage than good.

The best long-term, wildlife-friendly solutions are still the low-tech ones:
• Pulling weeds out by the roots – yes, it takes time, but it’s highly effective.
• Smothering them with cardboard – a great way to block light and weaken weeds over time while feeding the soil as the cardboard breaks down. Just make sure not to use plastic sheeting or membrane, which can suffocate soil life and create long-term waste.

Let’s keep working with nature, not against it – and help our neighbourhood gardens and verges stay healthy, safe, and full of life.

Dragonfly: Garden spotlight on-
Pulmonaria officinalis: The Bee’s Knees of Early Blooms

Meet Pulmonaria officinalis, aka lungwort—a shade-loving superstar with silvery-spotted foliage and nectar-rich flowers that help bees wake up and fuel up after winter.

Flowering from late winter to early spring, lungwort is one of the earliest food sources for honey bees, bumblebees, and other pollinators. Its clever color-changing blooms start pink and turn blue, signaling different nectar levels—nature’s way of directing the best customers to the freshest stock!

Lungwort isn’t just pink-to-blue magic—it also comes in soft whites, delicate lilacs, vibrant magentas, and deep sapphire blues, adding splashes of color to shady spaces.

This compact, clump-forming perennial grows to around 30cm high and 45cm wide (1ft x 1.5ft), making it ideal for shady borders and woodland gardens. It thrives in partial to full shade, loves moist, well-drained soil, but can handle dry shade once settled. Keep it watered in dry spells, but otherwise, it’s a fuss-free gem.

Its beauty isn’t fleeting, either. While the flowers shine in early spring, the silvery, speckled foliage keeps things interesting through summer and often stays semi-evergreen in winter, adding structure to your garden year-round.

Why You Need It:
• Vital for pollinators—one of the first nectar sources of the year.
• Tough, shade-loving, and low-maintenance—thrives where fussier plants fail.
• A stunning mix of flowers and foliage all year—from early blooms to striking leaves.
