๐Ÿ† Award-winning architecture | The Windy Hoose | Best Individual New Build or Small Development 2026

Weโ€™re delighted to share that The Windy Hoose has won the Individual New Build or Small Development award at The Herald Property Awards for Scotland! ๐ŸŽ‰

Set within an existing farm holding in North Lanarkshire, the project replaced a redundant agricultural storage building with a contemporary four-bedroom family home, carefully designed to respond to its rural setting.

Located within the Green Belt, the house was positioned behind existing agricultural buildings and established vegetation, allowing it to form part of the existing farmstead while minimising its visual impact. Its orientation also makes the most of natural daylight and panoramic views westwards across Lanarkshire towards Glasgow.

The design takes inspiration from the organic evolution of traditional farmsteads. The house is formed as two linked volumes, creating the appearance of a collection of buildings that have developed over time. Natural stone references traditional agricultural buildings, contrasted with black standing-seam steel cladding for a contemporary interpretation of the familiar farmstead palette.

Inside, generous open-plan kitchen, dining and living spaces connect directly with the landscape, while four bedrooms, family spaces and a home office provide a flexible home designed around modern family life.

Sustainability and long-term performance were central to the design, with SIPs construction, a highly insulated and airtight building envelope, an air-source heat pump and underfloor heating helping to create an energy-efficient and comfortable home.

The Windy Hoose brings together the character of a traditional farmstead with the efficiency and clean architectural language of contemporary design - rooted in its rural setting while embracing modern living.

Weโ€™re incredibly proud to see the project recognised with this award, and grateful to our clients and the wider project team who helped bring it to life.

Our second award of the night - making it a very special evening for the CD Architects team! ๐Ÿฅ‚๐Ÿ†

๐Ÿ† Award-winning architecture | Doune Kirk Hall | Best Renovation & Conversion Project of the Year 2026

Weโ€™re delighted to share that Doune Kirk Hall has won the Renovation & Conservation of the Year award at The Herald Property Awards for Scotland! ๐Ÿฅ‚

Originally a modest Kirk Hall and later a stonemasonsโ€™ store, the building has been thoughtfully transformed into a contemporary family home - celebrating its history while embracing a sustainable future.

The project holds a particularly personal story for our client, whose grandfather was one of the original stonemasons involved in constructing the hall. That connection shaped our conservation-led approach throughout the project.

One of the most intricate elements was the careful deconstruction of the original front gable. Each stone was catalogued, removed and stored before being meticulously reinstated - preserving the craftsmanship of generations past and creating a sensitive connection between the historic building and the new six-metre extension.

Inside, the original hall-like character is balanced with generous contemporary spaces, including a new kitchen and dining area, master suite, feature bridge and staircase, rooflights and a dramatic double-height sitting room.

Sustainability was also central to the design, with highly insulated timber framing, an air-source heat pump and underfloor heating helping create a comfortable and energy-conscious home.

The result is a home rooted in heritage, family and craftsmanship, while looking firmly towards the future.

Weโ€™re incredibly proud to see this project recognised with the Renovation & Conservation of the Year award, and grateful to our clients, consultants, contractors and everyone involved in bringing Doune Kirk Hall back to life.

One of two awards for our projects at this yearโ€™s Herald Property Awards for Scotland - more to come! ๐ŸŽ‰

๐Ÿ† CD = Completed (the) Double! ๐Ÿ†

We had a fantastic night at The Herald Property Awards for Scotland in Glasgow on Thursday night. It was great to share the evening with colleagues and clients. ๐Ÿฅ‚

The icing on the cake was, of course, winning both categories we had been nominated for! ๐ŸŽ‰

Our Windy Hoose won the New Build or Small Development of the Year and our Doune Kirk Hall won Renovation & Conversion of the Year... completing the double! ๐Ÿ†๐Ÿ†

Both our clients were delighted with the wins, and we would like to thank them for not only trusting us with the design but for retaining that design and building them to such a high standard. ๐Ÿ‘

We are extremely proud of our team at CD Architects Ltd, both past and present, who have worked hard on these projects over the last few years. โœจ

Well done everyone!

ANNUAL EDINBURGH FRINGE DAY OUT! ๐ŸŽญ

Over the weekend, the team headed to Edinburgh for our annual summer day out at the Edinburgh Fringe Festival!

We kicked things off at Brewhemia with a few drinks while everyone arrived, before heading over to Miroโ€™s Cantina Mexicano on Rose Street for a late lunch. We couldnโ€™t recommend the food enough! ๐ŸŒฎ๐Ÿน

With full stomachs, we walked across the city to Just The Tonic at The Caves to catch A Murder Mystery Musical - a fantastic show packed with great laughs, impressive vocals and plenty of entertainment. ๐ŸŽถ๐Ÿ”Ž

We then made our way to The Beehive Inn on Grassmarket before returning to where the day began at Brewhemia, and catching the last train home together.

A brilliant day out with a brilliant team! Hereโ€™s to the next one - until next year, Edinburgh! ๐Ÿฅ‚๐ŸŽญ

It was a pleasure to recently revisit this project now that the transformation is complete! โœจ

This home has undergone an extensive renovation, including major internal alterations, two carefully designed extensions, and the creation of additional ground floor living space. A striking double-height reception area with a feature staircase now forms the heart of the home, while the existing roof was removed and rebuilt to provide increased headroom on the first floor. The interiors have also been completely reimagined throughout.

Swipe through the before and after photos to see the incredible transformation and the scale of the works โžก๏ธ.

The best part? Receiving fantastic feedback from our clients and knowing they are thoroughly enjoying their beautifully revamped home ๐Ÿ .

We're delighted to announce that not one, but two of our recently completed projects have been shortlisted as finalists in this year's The Herald Property Awards!

This recognition celebrates two very different projects, each united by a shared commitment to thoughtful design, quality craftsmanship and strong client collaboration.

Kirk Hall Conversion, Doune
A sensitive conservation, conversion and extension of a former Kirk Hall, transforming a historic stone building into a contemporary, sustainable family home while preserving the character and craftsmanship that make it so special.

The Windy Hoose, Airdrie
A contemporary four-bedroom family home set within a rural farmstead, carefully designed to respond to its Green Belt setting, maximise panoramic countryside views and reinterpret traditional agricultural architecture in a modern way.
We're incredibly proud to see both projects recognised on a national stage. A huge thank you to our fantastic clients, consultants, contractors and everyone involved in bringing these projects to life.

We're looking forward to celebrating with all the finalists at the awards ceremony - wish us luck!

๐Ÿ‘‹ Meet some of the faces behind the projects!

As the practice continues to grow, we thought it was the perfect time to introduce a few members of the team who have been making a real impact.

๐Ÿ“ Gabriela Puente
Our newest team member, Gabriela, has joined us as an Architectural Designer. Gaby has already hit the ground running and is sinking her teeth into some exciting commercial projects. We're delighted to have you on board - welcome to the team, Gaby! ๐Ÿ‘

๐Ÿ“ Gary Quinn
Gary recently joined us full-time as a Graduate Architectural Technician following his graduation from college. He has gone from strength to strength, supporting the team across a wide range of projects - from small-scale domestic work to larger commercial developments. Keep up the great work, Gary! ๐Ÿ‘

๐Ÿ“ Owen
Some of you may already recognise Owen, who completed his Part 1 placement with us last year. Following his Honours graduation, Owen returned to the office for the summer to help us through a busy period. He's been working behind the scenes on domestic building warrants and commercial feasibility projects, making a valuable contribution to the team.

Owen will be heading back to the Glasgow School of Art in the coming weeks to begin his final year. Thank you for all your hard work over the summer, Owen, and we wish you every success for the year ahead! ๐ŸŽ“๐Ÿ€

It's fantastic to see our team continuing to grow, develop and support a diverse range of projects. Here's to the exciting work ahead! โœจ

Designed to maximise natural light, this new rear extension features a striking glazed gable end and rooflights, creating a bright, open living space that feels connected to the garden. The wood-burning stove provides a cosy focal point, making the space just as inviting during the colder winter months ๐Ÿ”ฅ.

We also introduced rooflights and sun tunnels to the existing music room, bringing daylight deep into the heart of the home and enhancing the main living areas throughout the day โ˜€๏ธ. Rich brown herringbone flooring flows seamlessly from the existing house into the new extension, visually tying the old and new spaces together and creating a cohesive feel throughout the home.

The finished project is brought to life by our client's eclectic, one-of-a-kind collection of furniture, artwork, and treasures gathered over many years of travel, giving the space a unique personality that truly feels like home ๐Ÿ .

What do you think of this transformation?
