Every successful project starts with a good understanding of the site.

For speculative sites, a pre-application enquiry can be a valuable first step. It gives you the opportunity to discuss the principle of development with the planning authority, identify potential constraints and possibilities.

That early feedback can help shape a more informed design and support decisions before you commit significant time or money to a site. It isn’t a guarantee of planning permission, but it can give you a clearer picture of the opportunities and challenges ahead.

So today it's a preliminary design we've prepared to support a pre-application enquiry for a rural barn style dwelling in the Shropshire countryside.

A throwback to one of our favourite schemes!

We transformed a site once occupied by a single home into two beautiful Georgian-style houses. Two years later, we’re back on site, this time working with the new owner on plans to renovate the existing home.

A new chapter for a familiar place, and an equally exciting project to be part of.

A new home with traditional character!

Designed to sit comfortably within its garden setting, this bespoke dwelling brings together traditional character, considered detailing and the comfort of a modern home.

Thoughtful landscaping and soft natural light complete the picture, creating a place that feels settled and welcoming from day one.

Thinking about a new-build home of your own? We’d be happy to help you explore what’s possible.

A Victorian kitchen transformed! 🏡

Great architecture considers the inside as much as the outside. How a space feels, flows and functions is just as important as how it looks.

This single-storey extension to a Victorian home in Solihull transforms a once-limited kitchen into a bright, open and welcoming space to cook, dine, entertain and relax.

The lean-to roof creates a generous vaulted ceiling, with pitched roof windows bringing natural daylight deep into the room and enhancing the sense of space.

Whilst we’d never claim to be interior designers, we always design with the interior in mind. Considering furniture, kitchen layouts and everyday movement from the outset...

A home built into the Shropshire landscape… 🌿

We’ve submitted a pre-application enquiry for this bespoke contemporary home, designed to sit within the rolling countryside.

Working with the site’s natural topography, we’ve developed a split-level design that nestles into the landscape, reducing its visual impact while creating generous living space for our clients’ forever home.

Inspired by modern european architecture, the proposal combines clean lines and flat roof forms with expansive glazing, framing far-reaching views and connecting the interiors with the surrounding countryside.

Fingers crossed for a positive response 🤞🏻..

PROJECT MILL FIELDS 🎨

Delighted to share some photos of our single storey extension project in Kinver. Replacing an existing dated and leaking conservatory with a new modern single storey extension to provide an open plan kitchen overlooking the River Stour which also included a secret art studio for our client! 👩‍🎨

It’s a side of our work we don’t shout about enough—but following a series of planning approvals and listed building consents, we thought it was time to share more.

Whether it's internal alterations, sensitive extensions or listed barn conversions, we help clients unlock the potential of historic buildings while respecting the character that makes them special.

Our approach combines thoughtful design with detailed heritage and supporting information, presenting a clear, considered case for each proposal. This has helped us secure consent for some ambitious projects, demonstrating what can be achieved with the right approach.

We were also recently recommended to a potential client by a conservation officer to help them with their project which is the biggest compliment we could ask for!

If you own a listed building or a property within a conservation area and are considering making changes, we’d love to hear from you. Get in touch to discuss your ideas and how we can help...

Sometimes a little goes a long way…

For this project, we explored both single and two storey extensions before deciding that the greatest potential lay within the existing footprint—reimagining the property as a charming country home.

This approach keeps the works aligned with our clients’ budget while allowing for a full internal refurbishment, creating a more comfortable, energy efficient home designed around their needs for years to come.

Alongside the internal transformation, carefully chosen changes to the external materials will refresh the frontage, enhance its character and deliver that all-important kerb appeal.

Keeping it in the family!

Today, we’re revisiting one of our earlier projects after receiving a new instruction from the parents of this previous client! They’ve asked us to provide design advice for their own renovation project, and we’re excited to begin helping them bring their ideas to life.

Although recommendations can come in many forms, nothing compares to the trust that comes from word-of-mouth referrals. We’re incredibly grateful to our clients—past and present—for continuing to recommend Foster Architecture & Design to their family and friends.

Flat roofs don’t have to be boring.

This proposed single-storey rear extension combines a contemporary flat roof with a traditional oak frame, creating a warm and characterful addition to the home.

The decorative oak fascia and generous roof overhang add a beautiful detail while also helping to provide solar shading during the warmer months. A roof lantern introduces even more natural daylight into the extended living space, helping it feel bright, spacious and connected to the garden.

With the right proportions, materials and detailing, a flat roof can be both practical and attractive
