Sea swimmers and paddlers – please take care 🪼

Anyone heading into the sea along the Suffolk coast over the coming days is being advised to be aware of compass jellyfish, which have recently been spotted near Felixstowe. These jellyfish are known for their distinctive brown markings and can deliver a painful sting.

If you're planning a swim, paddle, kayak, paddleboard session or beach day:
🏊 Be aware of jellyfish in the water.
🪼 Avoid touching jellyfish, whether alive or washed up on the beach.
⚠️ Remember that detached tentacles can still sting.
🐕 Keep an eye on dogs, who may be tempted to investigate washed-up jellyfish.

While sightings don't mean people should avoid the beach, it's worth being vigilant and taking extra care when entering the water.

This month, we are celebrating the work of artist Stephanie Lambourne

Born in Hertfordshire in the early 1970's, Stephanie now lives in East Suffolk with her family. She studied Fine Art at Hornsey School of Art, Middlesex University, where her degree show attracted the attention of her tutor, Richard Robbins, and his sister, who purchased several pieces and encouraged her to pursue a career in illustration. However, Stephanie initially chose a different path, undertaking a PGCE in Art Education and spending several years teaching in schools and colleges while continuing to paint alongside her teaching career.

Following the arrival of her family, Stephanie decided to focus fully on her artistic practice and has since developed a distinctive style that is often described as quirky, colourful, light-hearted and illustrative.

Today, Stephanie is represented by Southwold Gallery in Suffolk and Bircham Gallery in Holt, Norfolk, where she has exhibited for many years. Her work can now be found in collections around the world, and she continues to take great pleasure in seeing her paintings find new homes.

In addition to her original artwork, Stephanie has a successful range of greeting cards with Green Pebble Cards, with new designs due to be released soon. Her work has also been transformed into a series of jigsaw puzzles with eeBoo Piece and Love, with a new puzzle recently launched and several more planned for release throughout this year and into 2027. A small selection of her paintings is also available through Ferini Gallery in Pakefield.

We simply love the colour, energy and sense of fun that shine through every piece of Stephanie's work, and we are delighted to celebrate her talent this month.

🔥 RED HEAT-HEALTH ALERT ISSUED 🔥

A red heat-health alert is now in place across southern England and the Midlands, meaning exceptionally high temperatures could affect everyone – not just those who are vulnerable.

This is only the second time a red alert has been issued, with the last occurring during the record-breaking heatwave of July 2022.

Please take extra care over the coming days:

🥤 Drink plenty of water and stay hydrated
☀️ Avoid direct sunlight during the hottest parts of the day
🪟 Keep your home as cool as possible
🫂 Check in on family, friends and neighbours who may need support

Extreme heat can also affect transport, energy supplies, food storage and water resources, so plan ahead where possible.

Stay safe, stay cool and look out for one another. ❤️

We all love our dogs, so let's help them stay cool, healthy and safe when temperatures rise.

Hot weather can be dangerous for our four-legged friends, and heatstroke is a serious condition that can develop quickly. Unlike humans, dogs can't cool themselves down efficiently, making them much more vulnerable during warm weather.

Here are some simple ways to keep your dog safe this summer:

💧 Always provide plenty of fresh, cool water.
🌳 Walk early in the morning or later in the evening when temperatures are lower.
🏠 Make sure they have access to shade and cool indoor spaces.
🚫 Never leave a dog in a parked car, even for a few minutes.
🔥 Check pavements before walks – if it's too hot for your hand, it's too hot for their paws.
🎾 Avoid vigorous exercise during the hottest part of the day.
🧊 Cooling mats, paddling pools and frozen treats can help keep them comfortable.

Keep an eye out for signs of heatstroke, including:
⚠️ Excessive panting
⚠️ Drooling
⚠️ Lethargy or weakness
⚠️ Vomiting or diarrhoea
⚠️ Difficulty breathing
⚠️ Collapse or loss of consciousness

If you think your dog may be suffering from heatstroke, move them to a cool area, offer small amounts of water, start cooling them with cool (not ice-cold) water, and contact a vet immediately.
