Moles are active year-round, but they're particularly busy in early spring and autumn. If you start seeing new mounds during these times, it's likely mole activity – especially after a period of rain, when the soil is easier for them to dig.

Unlike rats or rabbits, moles don’t leave droppings above ground or chew on things. If you’re seeing disturbance but no other signs of animal activity, moles might be your culprit.

European moles can shrink by a tenth in winter to save energy

Some moles can shrink themselves by over a tenth to save energy during the winter.

A new study shows the tunnelling mammals are among a handful of mammals capable of this unusual process, known as Dehnel's phenomenon.

European moles can ride out harsh winters by becoming up to 11% smaller.

A team of German researchers found that the species Talpa europaea is one of a handful that seasonally shrink their bones and organs during a process known as Dehnel's phenomenon. While this periodic change has been known of for more than 70 years, the exact reasons behind it have remained unclear.

DYK? There are estimated to be 35-40 million moles in the UK and the mole that lives with us is known as the common or European mole (the Latin name is Talpa europaea).

The mole is the only mammal to live solely underground - this is achieved because they have a greater proportion of red blood cells than other mammals, which helps them to live in an environment where oxygen levels are low.

They're also phenomenal diggers - they can shift 540 times their own body weight of earth and tunnel up to 200 metres per day.
