The council house could be making a comeback 🏠

The Government has announced £9.58 billion of funding from its £39 billion Social and Affordable Homes Programme, supporting around 73,600 new social and affordable homes across England over the next ten years.

With Greater Manchester set to receive £529 million to support around 4,400 new homes, the announcement could provide a significant boost to housebuilding across the region and create new opportunities for the wider construction sector.

But delivering more homes is only part of the challenge. As housebuilding gathers pace, quality, careful oversight and long-term protection will be just as important.

We take a closer look at what the return of council housebuilding could mean for the construction industry, and why building homes to last matters too.

Could more homes be built away from the traditional construction site? 🏠

Factory-built housing is changing the way some projects are approached, with sections of homes produced in controlled environments before being transported and assembled at their final location.

There can be clear advantages - consistent conditions can support greater precision and quality control, while preparing sections in advance can reduce the amount of work and time required on site.

But taking part of the process away from the site doesn't remove the challenges.

Transport, access, installation and the coordination between foundations, structural elements and services all need to be carefully planned. A perfectly produced section still needs to arrive safely and be assembled correctly.

As the industry continues to explore new ways of delivering homes, the question isn't simply whether we can build more away from the site, but how we can make sure those homes perform as intended once they arrive.
