🌱 Keeping lawns healthy through the dry spell

The continued hot, dry weather has really taken its toll on lawns, with many turning brown or appearing dormant. While this can look alarming, the good news is that most established lawns will recover well once cooler, wetter conditions return.

In preparation for that recovery, I'm currently applying my Summer Treatment (T3), which includes:

✅ A drought-safe (scorch-free) granular fertiliser to provide essential nutrients without the risk of burning the grass.

✅ A liquid seaw**d tonic to help reduce stress and support healthy root development.

As conditions are simply too hot and dry, I'll avoid spot spraying w**ds. Herbicides are less effective when w**ds are under drought stress and can place additional stress on the lawn.

Why this approach?

Rather than chasing a short-term improvement, I'm focusing on giving lawns what they need to recover when the rain arrives. The slow-release fertiliser and seaw**d will be in place, ready to get to work as soon as there's enough moisture in the soil.

If your lawn is looking brown, try not to worry. In most cases, it's simply protecting itself by going dormant, and with a little patience, it should bounce back as conditions improve.

☀️ Lawn Care During the Heatwave ☀️

With the current hot, dry weather, a few simple changes can help your lawn cope with the stress:

✅ Raise your mowing height (no lower than 4cm ideally)
✅ Avoid cutting if the grass is drought-stressed
✅ Leave clippings on the lawn where practical
✅ Water deeply and less frequently, ideally early morning
✅ Don't worry if the lawn loses some colour – most lawns recover well once rainfall returns

Remember, a slightly longer lawn will stay greener and healthier than one that's cut too short.

🌧️ Noticing your lawn thinning out after all this rain?

The continuous wet weather is causing many lawns to suffer from hypoxia — when the soil becomes so waterlogged that there’s not enough oxygen for the grass roots to breathe.

It’s a common issue on clay soils, where drainage is slower and excess water sits on the surface for longer. The result is weak, pale grass that struggles to recover on its own.

Once things start to dry out, aeration, a balanced spring feed, and improving surface drainage can make a huge difference in helping the lawn recover and grow stronger through the season.

If your lawn’s been hit hard by the wet weather, drop me a message and I’ll be happy to take a look and advise on the best way forward.
