This previous industrial build delivered by Northern Structures Limited, featuring 33 tonnes of hot-rolled structural steel, all fabricated in-house at our factory in Amble, Northumberland.

This project combined strength, practicality and performance, with the lower level finished in brickwork and the upper section clad in Trisomet insulated steel panels, specified to achieve a tailored U-value in line with the building’s performance requirements.

This agricultural shed in Jedburgh measures 25m long by 18m wide and features lower concrete panel walls clad with Plastisol-coated steel sheets, along with a fibre cement roof, a large roller shutter door and a personnel door.

A useful reminder for farmers and landowners considering diversification.

Changes to planning rules introduced in 2024 have opened up new opportunities for farmers across England to make better use of existing agricultural buildings. The updates make it easier to repurpose suitable buildings for alternative uses, including commercial space, homes, training facilities and outdoor recreation.

For many rural businesses, this could create valuable new income streams from assets that are currently underused.

Key changes include:

The amount of agricultural floor space that can be converted to flexible commercial use has increased from 500m² to 1,000m².

The number of homes that can be created through agricultural building conversions has also increased from 5 to 10, subject to the relevant criteria.

The rules also provide more flexibility for uses such as farm shops, commercial premises, training centres and outdoor sporting facilities — particularly welcome news for the equestrian and wider rural leisure sectors.

Project spotlight: Industrial unit in Barnard Castle, County Durham

This completed project showcases Northern Structures Ltd 's ability to deliver practical, high-quality industrial buildings from design through to construction.

Designed and built by our team, the unit features a robust hot rolled steel frame using approximately 7 tonnes of structural steel, along with full cladding, associated building works, high-performance glazing and secure door systems.

Although compact in scale, the building was designed to be efficient, durable and fit for purpose - meeting the client’s requirements while maintaining the quality and attention to detail expected from Northern Structures.

From initial design to final completion, we work closely with our clients to deliver steel portal buildings that are functional, reliable and built to last.

Last week, we said a very fond farewell to Gordon Taylor, who has retired after many years with Northern Structures Ltd

Gordon has been a valued part of the team for a long time, and we marked the occasion with a small celebration on Friday to thank him for his hard work, commitment and contribution over the years.
