Before you build, there are a few things worth being clear about.

Can you really picture the room sizes?

Can you see how the inside and outside levels work together?

And can you spot the awkward bits — stairs, roof slopes, doors and head heights?

If those things aren’t clear on the drawings, ask more questions before the work starts.

Much easier to change it on screen than on site.

A wall can look perfectly fine on one floor plan… until you look at the whole building together.

On this project, the upstairs stairwell wall didn’t line up with the wall below — which meant the bedroom sizes were wrong.

That’s the sort of problem that can be easy to miss on separate 2D drawings but much clearer once the building is viewed in 3D.

Better to spot it before it reaches site.

Some took longer than the finished video suggests.

But the point still stands:

Once work starts on site, changes can get expensive very quickly.

Much better to spot the problem before the first bucket goes in the ground.

**Follow for more things worth seeing before you build.**The homeowner and the builder can look at the same drawing and picture two completely different things.

One sees the dream.

The other sees how it has to be built.

The problem starts when those two pictures don’t match.

That’s where 3D can help — everyone can look at the same finished idea before the work starts.

Some building problems are easier to deal with before the machines start moving. 😄

This one was a bit of a VFX experiment — and definitely took longer than the finished video suggests.

But the point still stands:

Once work starts on site, changes can get expensive very quickly.

Much better to spot the problem before the first bucket goes in the ground.

A little preview of something I’m working on.

The idea is simple: a 2D drawing can tell you what’s being built — but can you actually picture it?

This is the animated version I’ve made first to test the idea, shots and timing.

Tomorrow I’ll try bringing it to life properly with the camera.

Live-action version to follow.

“That won’t work.”

Three words nobody wants to hear once the building work has already started.

A drawing can look perfectly fine until somebody actually tries to build it.

Head height, levels, structure, access — the earlier you spot the problem, the easier it usually is to fix.

**Better to find it on screen than on site.**

A drawing can look fine until somebody actually tries to build it.

On this job, the stair stringer was heading straight across the double doors.

That’s the sort of clash that can sit quietly on a drawing and only become obvious when the work starts.

Much better to spot it before the trades arrive than work out how to fix it afterwards.
